Apologies, if this question isn’t the type for the Q&A. No offense taken if not the right fit but I love the channel, podcast, & I’m a huge fan of y’all’s. My question is regarding how movies are affected by the times in which they were made. They sometimes act as a mirror to society. To me, and I may be very wrong, but I think a big reason why the super hero genre really took off post 9/11 was because the idea of a hero to fix all the problems was really appealing when our world was turned upside down. Obviously the appeal of that escapism hasn’t gone away as the world has only gotten more complex since. Do you foresee any responses in film to the current divisiveness we see &/or the coronavirus pandemic? Thanks for all you do!
On the LotR Zoom i asked a question which went a bit too far off-topic, so I will ask it now: where does theme come in in the creative process of film making? Do you start with a theme, or does it come later? Does it arise organically at some point, or do you deliberately have to put it in or look for it? In short, is a theme discovered or invented and how do you go about doing that?
What are your biggest pet peeves in films/screenplays? I'm coming to terms with just how much I hate montages.
You've done episodes on your best of the 2000's and 2010's. What year would you consider the single greatest year for movies? I hereby nominate 2006, 2010, and 2014.
What is a movie that you consider “bad” that you’d like to rewrite? How would you rewrite it? Example: How could you make Battle Field Earth a good film?
