What do you think of unconventional screenplays like David Lynch movies like Molholland Dr or Twin Peaks? Is there a limit a screenplay can do when it relies a lot on the visual direction?

Hi guys! Listening to the episode about The Shinning and rewatching the original YouTube video made me think about something that I find it easy to spot in movies, but hard to define: Atmosphere. I love movies like The Others or even cartoon miniseries like Over The Garden Wall that have amazing atmosphere that draws the viewer in. However, it seems to me like a lot of elements that work to create good atmosphere are more visual in nature and, therefore, a little beyond the screenwriter’s control. What story elements do you believe create a “good atmosphere”? How can a writer achieve that? Thank you so much for your time and your awesome podcast!!
Do you write your Screenplays with specific actors in mind (maybe even ones you know, you could never get)? If so, how does it affect your process, or how does the script change, when you can not get your first choice?
I'd love to hear your takes on the differences of writing for a short vs. feature film, especially in regard to outlining practices and 'act' structure. What do you think are the key elements that make a great short, that might differ from what makes a good feature?
