Okay! So, his best female friend is the instigator.
Now, I know very little about Pokemon so, it’s a challenge to think of a trigger. Let’s see how this will play out.
1) Best friend finds an oddly-colored pokeball and throws it playfully at him. He’s pulled inside, transformed and set free.
2) Playing Pokemon Go, best friends downloads what appears to be a new patch the PG3463. It appears that it will be a camera filter to turn someone into a Pokemon but, it actually transforms her friend.
3) Best friend finds a strange, high-tech remote control-looking device. She points it at her friend and he is transformed.
4) Best friend steals a cool-looking gun thing from her scientist brother. Points it at her friend and is transformed.
Or, any other idea, you might have?

Had planned on something like that if it were one of the mad scientist options.

A twist on Pokemon Go and Pokeball. Our Best Friend character is playing Pokemon Go when an avatar of the main character appears. When she attempts to catch her buddy, he is transferred into the phone and TF'd... Feeding them treats sets them free.... but only for a limited time?
