Chapter 18 "The Fake Saint"
.
Part 1
While the five idiots were on their way to find Leon, Marie had come to a certain place.
Many people came to pray in the majestic building in the royal capital.
The Temple —— a religious institution supported by the majority in the Kingdom of Horfalt.
Climbing the long staircase of the temple, the main temple in the royal capital, when Marie approaches, the knights of the temple hold up the spears they were carrying.
They are knights for the temple, and their lord and master to serve is the god and saint whom the temple worships.
From their point of view, Marie, who had fooled them about the saint two years ago, was an abominable existence.
"What are you doing here, you scoundrel!"
"We told you to stay away from this place!"
Seeing the two temple knights pointing their spears at her, the people around them begin to make a commotion.
Marie didn't care and moved forward, but was blocked by the spears.
"Tell me to stop——op!?"
Marie grips each of the two spears and throws them both away with the strength of her muscles.
Magic covered Marie's body.
Marie is enveloped in a pale white light and goes straight into the building.
The double doors were left open to receive those who came to pray.
At the end of the hall was a beautiful white statue of a woman.
Saint —— A polished white statue with golden decorations.
She held a golden cane in her right hand and wore a bracelet on her left wrist.
She even wears a necklace, and when Marie sees it, her eyes sharpen.
Hearing the commotion, the temple knights gather and the priests also show up.
The most high and mighty priest was a man so fat that he looked as if he could hardly walk.
He is large and wears several rings with large jewels on his thick fingers.
Although it seems worldly from Marie's point of view, there is no doctrine in the temple that values frugality.
"I will not allow the likes of you to enter this sacred place! Temple Knights, I allow you to behead her!"
The other priests were puzzled by the words of the man who appeared to be the High Priest.
"But the deal said she was to overlook that girl."
"We had also included a condition that she stay out of this place. She is the one who broke the agreement! Now, face the judgment of the Saint!"
Temple Knights approach Marie with weapons in their hands.
However, Marie herself had no interest in them.
What she is seeing is the Saint's tools —— key items in that otome game.
"I need your strength right now. If you have accepted me once —— then please lend me your strength for this time."
She speaks to the statue of a Saint who never responds.
Obviously, the statue of the saint, who smiles lovingly, does not respond to Marie.
The High Priest snickers at Marie.
"What are you talking about? There is no way a Saint will respond to the likes of you. Now, tear her to pieces!"
The temple knights, whose blood is rushing to their heads, try to slash at Marie.
Marie does not move from her place, but reaches out her right hand to the statue of the saint.
"I need your strength to help my big brother. So —— quickly lend me your strength!"
What responded to the shouts were not statues of the Saint, but the golden equipments.
The saint's bracelet destroyed the statue's left arm and as it flew toward Marie it was attached to her left arm.
The cane destroyed her right arm and flew right in front of Marie, piercing the floor.
The necklace destroys the neck of the Saint's statue, and when it flies to Marie, it is attached directly to her.
The three equipments recognize Marie and repel all the oncoming blades of the Temple Knights.
The Temple Knights, blown away by the shockwave generated around Marie, writhed in pain as they slammed into pillars and walls.
Marie reaches out with her right hand and grips the cane, then speaks to the equipments.
"Thank you. Help me one more time. This time, so I don't make a mistake."
The situation is different from when she took the position of Saint from Livia.
Not for herself, but now for her older brother —— she needed the power of the Saint for Leon's sake.
The High Priestess is trembling.
"How can the holy equipments recognize the fake? This can't be happening. It should not be!"
Ignoring the High Priest, Marie looks at the temple knights rolling around her.
They don't seem to be able to stand up because of the previous attack.
Clutching the wand, Marie closes her eyes and uses the power of the saint.
"I'm sorry. I'm going to heal you now."
As she said that, a warm white light was generated around Marie and covered the temple.
By the time the light subsided, the temple knights were surprised to see the pain in their bodies disappear.
"A-Awesome. It doesn't hurt at all anymore."
"This is the first time I've ever seen such healing magic."
"Could it be that this person is really a Saint?"
The way the temple knights looked at Marie was different from earlier.
The priests were so startled that they could not speak, and the high priest even fell on his buttocks and pointed at Marie.
He had a pale face.
"Could it be that you really are a Saint-sama?"
Marie grins and pulls her cane from the floor and puts it directly on her shoulder.
"That's right. Be hospitable now."
Seeing the dignified behavior, the priests look at each other, sit down on the floor, and bow their heads.
The temple knights knelt on one knee and bowed their heads.
The high priest gets down on his knees in an awkward manner.
"Please forgive us! We thought you were a fake! W-We will welcome you with the treatment befitting a Saint in a moment."
In front of the trembling High Priestess, Marie kicks down the good treatment.
"I don't need it. More importantly, there are books related to the Saint kept here, right? Guide me there right away."
The High Priest looked up and was confused.
"The archives, is it? A Saint can access it, but——"
"It's okay. Just show me the way."
"R-Right away!"
When Marie says it, the High Priest hurriedly calls the female priests to guide Marie.
Marie heads to the book storage, confident that she will finally get what she wants.
(I have the power of a Saint in case of emergency.)
The books in the archives that he will be heading to are the books with special magic written in them by the Saint.
Legend has it that the saint used a number of magic.
Magic that can only be used with the qualities of a Saint and the equipment of a Saint.
Marie was going to learn as much of that magic as she could.
(I will never lose my big brother again.)
