Chapter 07 "Choices"
.
Part 1
After leaving the Roseblade residence, I sat on a bench in a park in the royal capital until nightfall.
I couldn't get my thoughts straight.
"I don't think I'll ever be able to make Nix's dreams come true."
Luxion answers my mutterings.
[It takes several months to be born. We cannot afford to wait that long.]
"——I guess we'll have to have Nix put up with that."
[For the sake of the unborn baby, it is a wise decision. I will add the Roseblade family officials to the list of escapees.]
"Aa, please."
[Just——]
I lifted my head and saw that Luxion looked a little apologetic.
[It is impossible to accommodate all of them. If we put some of them in cryo hibernation capsules, there is still room for more.]
"Eh?"
I had forgotten something important.
Until now, the number of people I would help had been centered on me, but I had forgotten to count the number of people involved, which would grow to derive from that number.
It's obvious. ——I can't save everyone.
I cover my face with my hands.
"How many people can we help?"
[Accommodating too many will cause problems in the ship's environment. Frankly speaking, we should avoid rescuing to the limit. If we are going to have generations to come after we escape, we need to have some leeway.]
Even if we accommodate as much as we can get in, it is meaningless if problems arise afterwards.
Considering the future, it is better not to have a large number of people.
I can't help but think that I can't help as many as I thought I could.
As I'm hanging my head, a family of three passes in front of me.
The child is in the center, with parents on either side, holding hands.
The young child looked up at the moon in the sky.
"It's the moon! Hey, Mom, Dad, I. I want! In the future, I want to go to the moon in an airship."
The parents laughed at their young child's reckless dreams.
"Go to the moon might be difficult. But I think you could be a sailor."
"Really?"
The mother gently placed her hand on the child's head.
"Someday we'll have an airship that can go to the moon."
"Yes! Then I'll take Papa and Mama to the moon!"
At this moment, it seems that the young child's dream was decided to become a sailor and go to the moon.
But it was the next moment.
"Keho, keho"
When the young child coughs, the father rushes to hold him.
"You pushed yourself a little too hard. Are you okay?"
"Yes. It's too bad, I was feeling good today."
"I'm sure you'll feel better soon. Then let's go outside and play with Papa."
"——I wonder if I'll ever get better?"
"I'm sure you'll get better."
The sight of the parents tearfully encouraging their frail young child in front of them lingered in my mind.
I just watched as the three of them left.
The way the young child looks reminds me of Erika.
Will there be more children like Erika in the future?
Will they suffer because they cannot adapt to the environment? I wondered.
As I ponder, Luxion advises me.
[Master, the idea of saving everyone is arrogant. You have people you have to save. Do not forget that.]
"Aa, right, I——"
The only priority should be the people around me.
Ange, Livia, and Noel —— and the others, family members and relatives should be prioritized.
It is wrong not to help important people for the sake of someone whose name I don't even know.
I clench my right hand with my left hand.
As much as I can muster. As if to suppress. To suppress my own stupid thoughts.
Like the family I just saw, I could still feel the life in my right hand that was in Dorothea sister-in-law's belly.
How many more children will be sacrificed in the future? While I was thinking about this, before I knew it, I had opened my hands.
I understand it at the same time.
——Apparently I'm a big idiot who can't choose smart choices.
"I've decided, Luxion."
[Yes, let's pick out the escapees right away——]
"We're gonna fight."
[Master?]
I lifted my hips from the bench, stretched out and behaved as usual.
Let's stop thinking and start acting.
"They to whom only bad ideas come might as well be asleep, I guess it's called? Things got troublesome, so I decided to fight Arcadia."
[As I have said many times, we cannot win.]
"Then I'll do it alone."
[Don't joke about it. That's just suicide.]
"——Even so, no way I just sit back and watch it happen"
I'm not trying to speak about justice.
If I keep silent and run away, I'm sure I'll regret it.
I don't want to live my whole life —— worrying about it.
"Are you not going to cooperate with me, Luxion?"
[Why are you so foolish, Master?]
Luxion was trembling because he didn't understand my decision.
It seems to me that he has more variation in his emotional expression.
"I've been a big idiot since my previous life. I'm trying to live smart, too, though."
[Then]
"But a fool cannot become a wise man. My character didn't change just because I was reincarnated. I learned something in my second life."
Perhaps he's given up, so Luxion confirms it to me.
[You're serious, aren't you?]
"I feel sorry for you, you've been caught by a bad master. Sorry, Luxion."
[You are really the worst master.]
"I'll take it as a compliment."
Once we decide to fight, both Luxion and I have to act fast.
I hate myself for getting used to all this.
[Let me check the victory conditions. What is Master's objective?]
"Beat down Arcadia"
[It's reckless.]
"Haha, I like that! ——I'm going to crush them, even if it means we beat each other down at the same time."
——Even if we end up beating each other down, Arcadia is the only one that must be sunk.
Maybe that will be the meaning of life for me.
And——.
"Maybe I can make your wish come true, Luxion."
[My wish?]
"I will fight the weapons left behind by the new humans. I will destroy them all, and I will protect the descendants of the old humans. Well, if I succeed, that is."
When I gave him a wry smile, Luxion's response was weak.
[My wish——my wish is ——]
