My interpretation of what Van Goth was saying, in regards to her status feeling criminal, was an underlying fear of someone weaponizing that status against her. Like say she had a partner and disclosed everything but then they had a messy break up down the line. If the partner was a horrible person they could lie and claim Van never disclosed anything and then it becomes a complicated court issue where Van has to try and prove that everything was disclosed.
