I bought the membership because of the refferences for this video specifically and I was really glad you gave them out. But in this post, there are only really a couple of them and there are zero references regarding the finance and logistics. Why? I don't understand.

What I find amazing is that people have developed software to use with quantum computers.

To say I barely know what I'm talking about here is being extraordinarily generous. But we don't see quantum effects at the microscopic level. I recall reading that one hypothesis for this is that at some scale gravitational effects interact with quantum systems and cause them to decohere. Recently I read in Quanta about the event horizons in black holes decohering quantum states. It is possible that quantum computers above a certain number of qubits will be cohered simply by the gravitational field, perhaps rendering them impractical?

Sabine, for two years I've been researching quantum computing for my near-future science fiction novel. I wish I had this excellent video before that endeavor. This is an indispensable resource for answering the two questions I had: 1. How many logical qubits will it take to become material in accomplishing tasks? and 2. What functions will they ideally be suited for? Thanks for this update on this most interesting topic!

In restaurants, make fish only available 3 days a week. Do the same with beef, pork, and chicken. Follow the same patter when you are buying groceries for your home. We are in trouble because we expect we can eat meat, fish, and poultry each meal of the day, every day of the week. I normally only have animal protein once a day. Twice if I include a small amount of cheese. And I skip some days. I found that I just do not need it every day, and that was not always the case.

Atomic and particle physicists are different animals. The instrumentation is different, the data capture and analysis are different, the scales of the enterprises are different. It’ll be like asking a sushi chef to bake you a birthday cake. That said, particle physicists are scrambling to justify the next collider and I doubt they’ll be able to. At best, there may be a few good years left at the LHC and some of the new neutrino experiments will run for awhile. My preference would be that they spend more time improving QCD. For all its glory, the standard model isn’t particularly good for computing emergent properties. Like how the quarks and gluons come together to produce nucleons with precisely quantized charge and spin. QCD seems much more useful as a computational tool at high energies than what we encounter in everyday life.

Maybe this is what particle physicists ought to be doing instead of creating experiments that don't catch anything, and designing bigger circles to smash particles together in?

Great point! https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abp8064 The qubit crowd does have cryostat and SQUID pics going for it, but to your point, the payoff is more likely to come from an unexpected place. Personally, I am most excited about the possibility of observing new physics in matter wave interferometers, as atomic physicists assemble ever larger ensembles of ions in a coherent state.

What I find interesting is the hype surrounding all things quantum and quantum computing even with pretty severe limitations in ability, but at the same time the quiet comeback of analog computing which is far more versatile. Analog computers can solve nonlinear systems very quickly compared to modern digital computers. Long gone are the days of ENIAC-sized room-filling metal crates. They have been miniaturized into programmable, low power systems on a chip which makes them easier to integrate into digital-analog hybrid systems. Perhaps analog computers will be the future of AI.

Hear, Hear...pizza toppings are serious business and I applaud Stefan for diligently considering the options. What I personally find abhorrent are those strange people who only like cheese pizza. These freaks need to be eradicated from polite society. There, I've said it openly and I won't take it back.

Underwear with the days of the week are so limiting, and it might be 2 weeks before I have time to wash clothes. An idea for the merch store -- underwear with the Standard Model elementary particles on them. Ooh...sock pairs with a particle and its antiparticle. I'd buy nerdy socks as Christmas presents.

My computer is many years old, but works fine for my purposes. Family and friends told me, I need to buy a new one. My excuse: I wait for the first quantum computer, that's available. Think I must bury this idea now.

So companies like IBM and Google publicize QCs to bump up their stock price. Some companies (and governments) that come up with the big breakthroughs are unlikely make them known. Just make sure one [is] put in the cloud so we can finally unzip all of our old encrypted zip files.

"... quantum computers can only solve linear problems." I did not know that. It is not obvious.

Let it also be known that solving for the correct combination of pizza toppings that will appease the maximum number of family members is one of the most challenging optimization problems. Quantum computers are powerless when confronted with it. Only a husband can be entrusted to find the right solution. Of course, as with all good things, it takes time.
