OK, the lesson from our use of fossil fuels is that it's better to live with natural patterns and cycles than to try to control them. The best reason to even consider "controlling" weather would be if global cooling was threatening an ice age we could meter out CO2 from burning fossil fuels in an attempt to maintain the climate. This is the only world that will support us, Mars and interstellar travel are delusions that allow people to ignore the devastation that we cause.

I agree with Colleen. The robot balancing a jointed pendulum reminds me of seals balancing beach balls (or beers if you know the ancient Guinness ad). The next step (ahem) is the more dynamic fall and catch, i.e. walking, juggling, etc. AI tuned tokamaks seems to be like this, but is it? I'm really amazed at how well the modeling to train the AI worked. I wondered about the relation between the simulating program and the controlling program, and whether there is an analytic approximation that makes use of research non-linear dynamics and synchronization. Google: Kuramoto oscillators. A 2003 popular science book, "Sync, the emerging science of spontaneous order" by Steven Strogatz, brought this insight to the wider world. Controlling the weather might be technically possible in 100 years from now, but, as the weather does not respect country borders, it might take a 1000 years before an international agreement is reached about which weather we all want.

Thanks, luval, I've been replacing the thermocouple in my furnace this morning and I haven't had the time to chase this down myself.

I speculate that once you have more than one player trying to control chaos for their own benefit, that it becomes "Mutually Assured Chaos" (MAC, similar to MAD-Mutually Assured Destruction") unless one player can outcompete all other players. And that this is an incentive for cooperation, for higher levels of organization to form that have only one utility function instead of several competing ones, both in biological and human systems, so MAChaos leads to MACooperation, at least sometimes, given the right conditions (whatever they are). Predictability is a factor in evolutionary fitness, so by forming a higher level organism, one can have more predictability than competing with other organisms. On the other hand there might be a tradeoff with innovation, which is spurred not only by competition between groups, but also by competition within a group, by its (previously independent) parts, which have become entangled by forming the group in the first place. Recently I published an evolutionary game theory paper in Evolution that uses the word entanglement in a very different way than in Quantum Measurement, but of course my mind's natural propensity to consilience (a feature scientists share with conspiracy theorists, though the former are also constrained by another evolutionary heuristic, namely Occam's razor) led me to think that perhaps one can cast quantum mechanics as at least two classical "players/particles/fields", each trying to minimize its own action, instead of having one universal action which is classically minimized. Quantum fluctuations may result from this multi-action minimization sometimes, and also, under certain (coherent) conditions, there is only one action to be minimized. On the other hand, a macroscopic number of players leads to classical behavior with one effective action.

What if we turn chaos control into game theory, with more than one player trying to optimize their own utility function? India wants monsoons on schedule, but Sub-Saharan nations want more precipitation and less warmth? Is it still possible to control chaos?

This was great! I love hearing that we are making progress on something. The animations were excellent and I suspect required extra effort. DeepMind has chalked up win after win. Without doing any research, I'm wondering if the chaos control effectively adjusts the parameters of a system to move it into a non-chaotic regime, say a simple limit cycle, or if the chaos control works on the system in such a way that it is merely in a pseudo limit cycle regime. In the former case, the future of the system is exactly predictable at all points in the future while in the latter case, the system will only be approximately predictable, not straying far from the limit cycle path it approximates. I did finally buy a hardcopy of Lost in Math. I had listened to the audio book a while ago, but there's nothing like an actual book. Sabine, your royalty is what, about 38 cents or so. Merry Christmas, don't spend it all in one place.

I suggest Chaos simulation & control as a field for Sabine to research in the future, I'm pretty sure there's a valid way to justify it somehow. 😀
