I think it would be interesting if you were to interview Charles E. Till (https://www.nae.edu/19579/19581/20412/27663/Dr-Charles-E-Till) and Yoon Il Chang (https://www.anl.gov/profile/yoon-il-chang) who worked on the integral fast reactor and wrote "Plentiful Energy" (https://www.thesciencecouncil.com/index.php/more-info/books/plentiful-energy-by-charles-e-till-yoon-il-chang) that covers the design of the EBR II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIeE9NMP8Oc&t=2s) that provides a good overview about it. The IFR design was proven safe and capable in 1986 and I believe provides a viable replacement for all fossil fuels as it would also provide the capacity to produce hydrogen from water for use in fuel cells that could be used in all modes of transportation in addition to safe and reliable baseload power. The cost questions, such as that of reprocessing, generally ignores the true cost of our use of fossil fuels that includes the environmental degradation from mining operations, refining, pollution that includes greenhouse gas emissions, etc. Till and Yoon provide a great reference of their reactor.

D+T and D+D refer to deuterium and tritium, Colleen. What I like about Aleksei's idea is that we don't need to worry about storing our current radioactive waste for many thousands of years. If fusion eventually becomes viable we could use the byproducts to effectively neutralize our current radioactive waste. We're not talking about fusion being viable in 20 years, we're talking 100 years or so, we should figure out the necessary engineering solutions by then.

I think Mots has nailed it, actually. Legality has never stopped the US in the past, and we certainly commit atrocities across the world today with no regard for laws -- as long as the press isn't looking. At home though, we haven't violated Native American treaties for a long while, but because of optics, not laws. Prior to the proliferation of casinos on Native American land, the tribes were perfectly fine selling out their land to the government for the sweet smell of cash. But now that they are raking in the dough via other means, the price of land usage (and the label "sacred") has skyrocketed. Combine that with NIMBY, and Yucca Mountain remains closed. But some day, as Mots points out, the money involved will drive the deal, NIMBY and "sacred" be damned.

Ooh, I had never even considered centralized vs decentralized. This is why I like to hang around here, I learn so much from such a diverse group of smart people.

In my memory, the gap between nuclear energy related deaths and solar was bigger than the data from ourworldindata.org implies, probably poor recollection on my part. I thought I remembered that in particular uranium mining is a deathly task. (As is most mining, but uranium in particular.) But to stay on the tangent of grid stability: The problem of renewables with electricity grid balance is important and pronounced. By the way, nuclear energy has the reverse problem: Its production is too constant and cannot react quickly enough to big load changes (gas turbines can). The problem is somewhat ameliorated by the huge rotating generators in the nuclear plant - their angular momentum serves as an energy reserve. And another angle is that centralised plants entail a centralised grid, which often leads to single points of failure, especially in areas where the populated places span large distances such as Australia. Their grid went nuts recently when a single power line broke. Decentralised grids have the potential to be more resilient.

Thank you for informing me of these fascinating facts. My conviction remains that the land will be used eventually.... 1. The US is not a law abiding country now; 2. the US does not honor treaties with native Americans when inconvenient and 3. if a very rich person or rich people can make billions of dollars from something, (or they can grow the military industrial profits from something), they will re-shape the "law" and reshape the narratives. At some point there will be enough money involved and political correctness involved to put the shit there, in my opinion. Real world actions are not bounded by American "law" as recent history amply demonstrates.

Hi Rion, the duck curve is a real problem with solar power. Long term home battery storage sucks (maintenance, etc) so tying solar panels into the electrical grid is pretty popular. It would be wonderful to store the solar energy for after sundown when the demand for energy peaks. Without efficient (and preferably clean) solar energy storage, we currently need other large scale energy generation options. Having said that, if I were in charge of the world, I would alter the building codes to require that all new homes have solar panels installed on their roofs. I suspect that I would be impeached for my actions rather quickly.

Hi Mots, Yucca Mountain is actually on Native American land (the Western Shoshone), so it is both politically incorrect and illegal to exercise eminent domain under the original treaties from way back when. The Shoshone tribal leaders did not originally object to having the facility on their land because the US government would be paying a hefty rent, but a neighboring tribe, the Paiutes, whose land abuts the region, initially objected for various "sacred mountain" and "not in my backyard" reasons. This set off a storm whereby the people and the politicians of Nevada, and now the Shoshone people as well, fought nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain.

One other solution that was not mentioned: nuclear fusion. D+T or D+D fusion produce a ton of neutrons that can be used to transmute minor actinides (the most dangerous stuff in the waste) into less angry elements fairly easily. So I would personally advocate just waiting. Keep the fuel in dry casks (they're OK for 300-400 years) in stable storage and wait for fusion.

Yes. Plenty of people die of photovoltaics. The leading cause of death is falling from a roof while installing or servicing panels. 1. we already follow a multi-thousand year (and much longer) perspective in climate change CO2 issues and changes we make. A mere 100k years is short in the big perspective that we have adopted. 2. we know enough about geology to put this shit back into the ground (granite etc. bedrock) from where the original uranium came from and even deeper, better bedrock etc. and safer. 3. eminent domain exists for displacing objectors to the use of Yucca Mountain. Each person with a home there can be given free beach front property or other mountain property on the East Coast under existing law. Sorry to be blunt, but this is how the real world works when society needs private property.

Yeah, I had a good chuckle at that. Sometimes, when I'm feeling particularly snarky, I make the comment in class that a small percentage of the potassium we need to regulate fluid flow across our cell membranes is radioactive. Just a small poke at the intelligent design crowd to hopefully get them to think a little bit.

I'm totally down for Sabine to make a 2-hour lecture explaining nuclear fuel recycling processes if that's ever her jam. The ways that were put forward to deter future people from nuclear waste sites are interesting, but I reckon putting up lots of big pointy things will make people *more* likely to go poke around a disposal site, to figure out what the heck they're for.

This week's video answered all of my questions. I think I'll use Squarespace to set up a webpage selling cheese-flavored uranium fuel rods. We still don't have any good long-term storage solutions. Rust-resistant copper -- oh great, instead of leaking in 50 years, the casks will start leaking in 80 years. We only have long-term band-aids. I'm totally on board with nuclear power and I'm especially fond of breeder reactors, having learned a lot about them from other contributors here, especially Jeffery. It looks like breeder reactors cost a little bit more to operate, mostly because we currently have enough uranium ore to mine to meet demand. Unfortunately, short-term politics means that breeder reactors are not being built in the necessary numbers to alleviate the uranium supply pinch when we finally exhaust the last mineable reserves.
