I admit being pretty confounded by Copenhagen "wave collapse" and fond of Bohemian mechanics, but this "final stage" of the interactionist quantum event reads very spookily: "The third stage of a quantum event is the stochastic choice that the source exercises in selecting one of the many received confirmations. [...] The final stage of a quantum event is the repetition to completion of this process by the source and selected absorber, reinforcing the selected transaction repeatedly until the conserved quantities are transferred and the potential quantum event becomes real." [from the linked Arxiv article] As Sabine puts it "When the offer wave arrives at the detectors, they both [or ALL potential absorbers] send back a confirmation wave. When those waves arrive at the source, the source randomly picks one. Then the waves to that one detection event enter a back-and-forth echoing process, until the probability for that outcome is 1 and that for the other possible outcomes is zero. That reproduces the collapse of the wave-function." What puzzles me is the "repetition" or "echo" here which realizes the event. Is this a process? All this seems to be doing is making the space-like spookiness of the instantaneous-everywhere wave function "collapse" into a time-like spookiness. I shrug with Sabine. The aesthetic justification (Uncertainty Principle and Born Rule "fall out" of Transactional) is there in the paper, but it's just a trade. Instead you have the postulate of four-vector standing waves, or an ontology which requires a higher level dimension of reality (than is detectable). Is a new formalism really a new interpretation? Anyway all this lead me to the point of my comment. I found this paper https://arxiv.org/pdf/1011.2287.pdf which is pretty well written critique of the leading casualty for reverse causality [sorry 4 Dad joke].

Although you could translate some of it to being economics, but it is all walks of life. Agriculture can be considered an economic activity, but is is also just about feeding ourselves; and knowing that actions taken when it is time to sow the seed will have a predictable future outcome when it is time to harvest the same field is about assuming present actions have a causal link with the future. Even just basic safety - like you are driving down the road and see a brick wall rapidly approaching you, then knowing that making an adjustment to the steering wheel might help you avoid hitting that brick wall is an attempt to use current actions to cause future outcomes. There are some societies that are more fatalistic than our own, and assume that all is just God's will and there is no point in trying to change it; but even they do tend to take some actions that expect to make some changes to future outcomes, or else they would not have survived even as long as this.

I did watch some episodes of Stargate. Not sure which one it was, it was good.

Another interesting series with wormholes and time travels is Stargate SG-1. They have even one episode in which the effects of a black hole gravity, including time dilation, are felt through the Stargate wormhole. Retrocausality could save a lot of bandwidth, you can get the messages before you send them. Consider that if you travel in time, but no correctly in space, most likely you end up in the outer space, somewhere, but I think that if you travel back in time your atoms would do it, too, so you just rewind back your life in the block universe. A nasty experience if you go so far back in time...

Ooh, a free will debate. While I completely agree with Sabine's "you have no free will" argument, I choose to pretend that I can actually make choices that influence my future. But, when it turns out that I've wasted a whole day farting around on the internet, I can take solace in the fact that I had no actual control in how my day played out.

I never read the books, but I binge-watched the TV series. I really enjoyed the British humor and I thought the series was brilliant. The problem with binge-watching, though, is that episode blur together. While I have vague memories of moments from the storylines you mentioned, I don't actually recollect the episodes.

Since superdeterminism and retrocausality are sometimes confused with each other, I poked around to look at Sabine's proposed experiments to test superdeterminism. But then, I came across a Backreaction blog post from 2019 (http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2019/07/the-forgotten-solution-superdeterminism.html) in which one of the commenters (Avshalom Elitzur) was referring to their paper on retrocausality (https://www.mdpi.com/1099-4300/20/11/854) and claimed an experimental test was underway. Indeed, their paper proposes an experimental test, but I don't have a good enough QM background to determine if their proposed experiment is useful.

OK, I will accept that some of the issue is about our own assumptions, but how would we break away from those assumption. Experiments do not actually demonstrate causality, they demonstrate a clear and consistent correlation between a pre-condition and a subsequent post-condition, and we assume that such a high degree of correlation between pre-condition and post-condition (when the pre-conditions are controlled to exclude any other possible causes) can be taken to imply that the pre-condition is the cause of the post-condition. It is possible to reverse that assumption, and to assume that a correlation between the past and the future implies a causal relationship where the future has predetermined the past. I am just not certain what value such an assumption would have, since it implies we cannot alter the future (i.e. the future is already pre-determined) because the future is altering the past (and thus the future is altering the present) and so the present is beyond out own control from our position within the present. This may be a theoretical possibility but does the hypothesis actually have any utility? Assuming that the future is the cause of the present would undermine any concept of free-will, since free-will assumes that our actions in the present can alter the future. There may be a valid philosophical argument against the existence of free-will, but I would again ask whether that philosophical argument brings with it any utility?

Knowledge without experimental support for that knowledge is no different from religious knowledge. The problem, as I eluded to above, is that experimentation requires pre-conditions followed by post-conditions, and so assumes the post-condition is caused by the pre-condition. How would you design an experiment that demonstrated that the pre-condition was caused by the post-condition?

The purpose of science is to gain knowledge and understanding, and to make as much of that knowledge useful as possible. Forecasting is predicting the future.

The 'Red Dwarf' TV series and books had backward-running timelines both as a joke to conserve continuity when the one of the main characters, Dave, had twin boys in one episode they grew up in an alternate timeline, and an episode where Dave and the robot Kryten become comedians because everything they say sounds hilariously garbled; it's way funnier than I just described it.

There are a number of issues here. Firstly, most science fiction scenarios about time travel are not so much simply about changing the direction of time as about causing discontinuities in time (i.e. jumping from one moment in time to another moment in time without your having any existence during the intervening time). If one looks at simply reversing time while retaining a continuity in time, then to anybody actually experiencing that reversal in time they will still believe they are moving forward in time, because time is defined by our memories of the past, so if we start moving backwards in time so we will still have memories of our past but those memories will unwind as we move back through that past time we are travelling through. With regard to causality itself, how would you create an experiment to prove reverse causality. The purpose of science is to help us predict the future, and so we create experiments that create pre-conditions and then look at what is the post-condition that is subsequent to those specific pre-conditions. What value would science give us if all we could do is use the future to predict the past, since we already know what the past is, and it is the future that is uncertain.

So when is Sabine going to write an intriguing science-fiction brain-twister on Superdeterministic retrocausality? Or is the question, when did she have finally will be have written it?
