No Sun, No Wind, Now What? Renewable Energy Storage

A couple of more "storage" technologies to throw into the mix. One is underwater pumped energy storage. Search for "Deep Sea Pumped Storage" or "Underwater energy storage" for examples. I would guess that there is a sizable carbon footprint to build these but they work even where there are no hills for water to run down (e.g., off the coast). Another place where energy is "stored" is in spent nuclear fuel. It's a high tech approach but could produce a lot of energy. See http://web.mit.edu/fusion-fission/HybridsPubli/LIFE_TOFE/Moses.pdf

Gah.🤦‍♀️ And then many people think that *all* greenies and lefties think like that! Conservative media loves to spruik that.

At least in Germany, it's even weirder than that, because we have environmentalists with counterfactual reasoning arguing that if the government hadn't agreed to phase out nuclear (a decision that was very obviously triggered by the Fukushima accident) then we wouldn't have invested in solar and wind. It's an utterly bizarre argument, seeing that if we hadn't phased out nuclear we'd could have "phased out" much of coal power.

As a cranky Lefty, my assertion is that if more governments did have political will to finance developing renewables and storage, and to invest in infrastructure, we'd be in less of a damn mess now.

ding ding ding ding -- we have a winner!

I've never before seen all of this wrapped up so cogently, and with just the right level of snark for seasoning. Bravo. Let us review: Over-heated Euro-Socialist activists: "It's ONLY a matter of political will!!" Dr. Cassandra: "Bullshit. It's complicated. Shut up and listen."
