Is Nuclear Power Green?

Rad Antonov

A paper in this week’s Nature describes novel 1-1.4 eV bandgap semiconductors fitted with back surface reflectors that can be used to make thermophotovoltaic cells with 40% efficiency, which is better than many turbines and a promising path to inexpensive thermal grid storage: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-04473-y. Intermittent renewables in combination with storage can be used as baseload power. Hopefully, one day this type of technology replaces both fossil and fission fuels.

We have to dig giant tunnels and bury nuclear waste in canisters of kitty-litter clay. (That's what the Finnish project is.) I'm still not very keen on nuclear plants for how long the waste is radioactive.

It depends on how smart we are and how dedicated we are to going green. If it is 100 years before we have truly moved off of fossil fuels, the amount of nuclear waste we will have accumulated will seem like a drop in the bucket. It is unlikely I will be around at the time, unless I get abducted by aliens again and ...
