While volcanoes are arguably scientifically interesting, they are also scary. On Saturday we talk about the most deadly natural disaster we currently fact, which is earthquakes. More specifically we will talk about ways to predict them. We found so much interesting material that we've made it into two parts. This week we talk about long-term and mid-term predictions (decades to months), and next week we talk about short term predictions (months to seconds.)
I have to admit I always thought geoscience is somewhat dull, but seeing how much mysteries there are left to solve, I've changed my mind.

The thing I like about Sydney and my home-town area of Goulburn is apart from maybe Sydney being wiped out by a mega-tsunami, pretty much nothing happens except for big storms. It also pleases me that Australia is devoid of active volcanoes.
Oh yeah I read about that. Glad I don't live in CA any more.

Years ago I saw a documentary about the volcano at Yellowstone National Park, and it freaked me out a bit. Given everything that could go wrong (including humans) it is kind of amazing we are still here.
