I think the advantage is 24-hour power without the need for batteries or running power infrastructure between nations (possibly across hostile nations). This would be one solution to the duck curve problem. Having said that, I agree with you that the cost/benefit analysis would rule this out as a solution, at least for now.

Most radio astronomy these days at frequencies of <1 GHz is done with arrays such as these (LOFAR, MWA, etc), and the computers and phasing technology are good enough to do imaging now. Would the transmission from the orbiting station be directional as well, in order to keep peace with the radio astronomers? To quote a recent short video by Sabine, "can't we get Elon Musk to do it?"

Transmitting solar energy from space to earth because? not enough room down here for solar panels? Gobi desert anyone? No Sahahahah? Not that one. No room.

Indeed research about transmitting energy via a microwave connection was already studied in the 60s, also by NASA. They had an idea about building a space station with a vast amount of solar panels, which would transmit their energy to earth. This can be done by combining a large amount of dipole antennas, which can act as one highly directional antenna by changing the phases of the feed currents of the dipoles. The microwave bundle could pass through clouds. If we find a way of cheaply transporting solar panels to space, it would be a 24/24 source of clean energy!
