We don't really need plastic packaging. We could simply go back to the packaging we used prior to the introduction of plastic packaging.

This is a global problem that only government mandates can handle as the market has proven uninterested in acting responsibly.

As you suggest, when plastic biodegrades it usually just turns back into CO2, so just burning it and extracting its energy value while getting the same CO2 may still be the least bad option. As for steel constructed cars, we used to have things like that, but plastics have a better strength to weight ratio, and these days making things that are going to move about light is judged to be more energy efficient and so is considered that a plastic car is going to generate less CO2 than a steel car during its life time, even if the plastic may generate more CO2 at the end of its life.

@D Brown I was thinking hypothetically. I do wonder if using plant products as substitutes for plastic etc. will replace one set of problems with others in the longer term, including displacing food crops or native plants and wildlife and even human habitats, like oil palms often have.

There are places around the world were people do not have enough to eat. So personally, I think growing food to do anything except feed people is not in our best interest. There is also the hidden cost in farming, which includes land erosion, fertilizer usage, water table impact.

It seems there would be a lot of work to re-engineer the plastic we collect from trash pickup into something that is useful. I know it is being done to build roads in 3rd world countries, but they are doing it manually and using low income labor. So there is likely a scalability issue. I think factories should be required to have carbon capture devices on their exhaust systems. Until this happens we are only pretending to solve the climate crisis. If these clean factories are ever in place, then plastic collected through trash collection could be burnt to help run power plants, or reduced into a form that enables reuse.

The problem is greater than just plastics, it's with everything that we make, little is actually closed-loop, in which what is manufactured is returned back to industry for another round. With plastics the industry lied, while plastics are theoretically recyclable, they are generally downcycled in which they are just chopped up to become lower grade nurdles to make lower grade products. What we need are the development of a) cold-plasma pyrolysis and (b) enzymatic processes that actually break bonds to release the ethylene for return to industry to become high grade plastics again. These processes could be used to break down most of the plastics polluting the environment and wreaking death and destruction on wildlife and have the excess ethylene stored in depleted oil fields until it is needed. Before anyone rants about the energy needed for cold-plasma pyrolysis, we should develop an industrial scale EBR-II fast reactor that would provide unlimited electricity for this and also to generate hydrogen for the hydrogen era that will replace all fossil fuels.

Theoretically, could soybeans etc. be used to make plastic, which is then used to make steel, or something like that?
