"Whatever that means": nothing good 😅 "In British and Celtic folklore, names hold significant power, especially in relation to the fae (or fairies). If you accidentally "give" your name to a fae, it is believed that the fae gains control or power over you. This could manifest in several ways: 1. **Control or Manipulation:** The fae may have the ability to influence your actions or manipulate your will. They could call upon you or force you into agreements that are beneficial to them, but potentially harmful or disadvantageous for you. 2. **Trickery or Deception:** Fae are known for their cunning and trickster nature. Once they know your name, they can use it to lead you into dangerous situations, confuse you, or create mischief in your life. 3. **Binding Agreements:** In some folklore, knowing someone's true name gives the fae the power to bind them into a contract or agreement, sometimes without the person realizing. Such agreements often have hidden consequences, as fae are notorious for twisting the meaning of their promises. 4. **Soul Possession or Enchantment:** Some tales suggest that giving your name to a fae could allow them to take a part of your essence or soul, making you vulnerable to enchantment or even entrapment in the faerie realm. Because of these dangers, many stories warn against sharing your true name with a fae and advise using a nickname or alias instead." (asked ChatGPT-4o, but that matches what I recall from different stories where fae were involved)

Fae asked if it can "have" the name, not if it can hear it. In fantasy Fae will exploit how things are worded for their own benefit - meaning if Wayland agreed at first, he would no longer be the owner of his name, whatever that means.

I don't know if it's the typesetting or smthg but this chapter was surprisingly hard to read. Found myself having to go over sentences multiple time. Also still not sure why Waylan decided to tell his name after refusing to do so ? Unless the "no" was referring to the Fae's statement about betting (it wasn't a question though).

Waylan understands the fae on a spiritual level.

I suppose they have no choice but to go along with what the fae says, eh? Thank the gods Irwyn's secret is practically impossible to figure out. Last thing anyone would want is a fae making conditions for others to follow. Good on Waylan for knowing how to deal with them! Wonder where he learned that?

I like this interpretation of the Fae, they're quite fun!
