Does the ‘perfectly healthy baby’ exist?
One of the lies that we often hear about infectious disease, particularly when it happens in children, is that it’s just “poor luck,” which is often a sneaky, sly way to push uncessary medical interventionism under a false premise. This includes aggressive vaccine schedules (more on this bellow)
The reality is that “perfectly healthy babies” who die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, childhood cancer or infectious diseases like polio and measles were not healthy to begin with. The phrase “perfectly healthy” is a ridiculous over-generalization that should really be interpreted as “not yet displaying any overt signs of disease (yet).
This is just as true for conditions like cancer, autoimmunity, and other chronic diseases in adults as well
The absence of a diagnosable condition does not equal health. This is ludicrous and should be obvious (but alas, isn’t) to anyone with at least 2 intact brain cells. Underlying biological/biochemical deviations from health (like loss of diversity in the gut) manifest as disease. These are addressable factors that often exist long before the onset of disease.
in 2023 alone, 32.3% of all live births in the U.S. were c-sections. It has been well-established that during vaginal delivery, a baby is exposed to the mother's vaginal and gut microbiota. This significantly helps to shape a healthy microbiome, which plays a tremendous role in immune system development. Babies born via c-section have a greater risk of infection after birth and a higher propensity for the development of allergies and autoimmune conditions later in life

Formula feeding can also impact a baby's microbiome in several ways, perturbing viral immune programming. Breast milk contains live bacteria and prebiotics (like HMO’s, which we’ll be discussing) that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Formula lacks these specific components, which leads to a less diverse microbiome and a weak immune system. Breast milk is also rich in antibodies, immune cells, and other bioactive compounds that help shape the infant's immune system and gut flora. Formula does not provide these immune-modulating factors.
Robust human research shows that breastfed infants develop a microbiome dominated by beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacteria species (crucial for the immune system) while formula fed infants have a higher prevalence of harmful fecal microbes.
The differences in microbial composition between breastfed and formula-fed infants is a leading cause of dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbiome that has been associated with various health issues, including allergies and autoimmune conditions in later life.

What about the health of the mother and the father? The underlying health of the mother and father both largely determine the health of the infant. This is true even for infants born vaginally and breast fed.
The microbiome health of the mother can significantly impact the quality of breast milk in several ways. For I nstance, a diverse and balanced maternal microbiome can influence the nutritional profile of breast milk, including the levels of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. This helps ensure that the milk meets the baby's developmental needs.
The maternal microbiome also plays a humongous role in shaping the immune components of breast milk like we mentioned. Healthy microbiota will enhance the production of immunoglobulins and antimicrobial peptides, which help protect the infant from infections and support their developing immune system. Mothers with a healthy microbiome produce breast milk containing more prebiotics that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the baby's gut. Conversely, chronic inflammation can negatively affect milk production and its quality. As we mentioned, breast milk is a source of beneficial bacteria that seed the infant's gut. A mother with a diverse microbiome is more likely to pass on a variety of beneficial microbes through her milk, which can support the infant’s microbiome development. The opposite is true for mothers with poor gut health.
Conversely, the health of the father can significantly impact the genes of the newborn in several ways. The health of the father and his microbiome affects sperm quality, including sperm count, motility, and morphology. Poor sperm quality leads to issues such as infertility or an increased risk of genetic abnormalities in the offspring.
Fathers can pass on genetic mutations that may arise in their sperm due to environmental factors and lifestyle choices
The father’s lifestyle and health leads to numerous epigenetic modifications in sperm. Factors such as diet, exercise, exposure to toxins, and stress can influence gene expression patterns that may be inherited by the child.
Nutrients such as folate, zinc, and other antioxidants are crucial for healthy sperm, and deficiencies are associated with numerous adverse effects on the offspring's genes and overall health

In many ways, the above factors contribute to a large majority of childhood illnesses, as well as susceptibility to and the virulence of (severity of) many viral and bacterial infections. Prior to the advent of ‘developed’ civilization, childhood infections were largely related to poor living conditions, such as a lack of sanitation and waste infrastructure, as well as socioeconomic conditions and malnutrition. Now, they are mostly due to poor and or uninformed decisions regarding personal and infant health
The current ecological landscape of human health and disease has two seemingly contradictory truths juxtaposed at the forefront of polarized discussing around public policy
1. Most people are extremely unhealthy (due to poor personal decisions, various environmental factors etc) and this does seem to neccesitate more modern medical interventionalism in the short term. At least at the level of the collective (‘public health’ policy)
2. Vaccines and life saving modern medical interventions do work at preventing infections and saving lives, but they are only necessary within the confines of the dysfunctions we’ve created via modernity.
3.Vaccines do have side effects and WILL shift you towards a TH2 or ‘allergic’ dominated immune response. Interestingly enough, thymosin-alpha-1 and thymalin are being researched In some European countries as a vaccine adjunct. Mainly to prevent vaccine related side effects and improve immune responses. These are thought to work by immediately shifting the immune system out of TH2 dominance.The obvious question that seems to get missed here - if vaccines don't have very well documented side effects, why is there research being conducted on other biologic drugs (like peptides and immunotherapies) to attentuate the side effects and improve outcomes. A lot of people are intentionally obfuscating the truth so as to avoid vaccine hesitancy.
A few difficult truths arise from this: at the collective level (large groups of individuals), modern medical practices like vaccination do reduce the spread of infectious diseases such as polio and measles. This is primarily due to the fact that the vast majority of Americans—and really everyone in developed countries—are extremely unhealthy. In some ways, this could be seen as a necessary evil given the context.
However, at the individual level, decisions around personal health (including good hygiene and living standards) absolutely impact whether vaccination (even against deadly infections like measles and polio) is necessary, if at all.
Vaccines, like all medications and medical interventions (hell, you could even throw many supplements into this bucket) need to involve a specific biological risk-vs-reward assements. Anyone telling you otherwise is engaging in a fallacious line of reasoning (ecological fallacy). I also do believe it’s safe to assume this is also true for those denying the benefits of vaccination for specific populations (exception fallacy)
Key concept: an ecological fallacy = incorrectly drawing conclusions about individuals from group level data
Example: vaccines stop the spread of infectious disease, therefore everyone should be vaccinated
the individualistic fallacy = incorrectly generalizing individual or niche population based data to make assumptions about the characteristics or behaviors of a large group. Vaccines may cause issues with the immune system, therefore no one should ever get a vaccine
You may notice that ‘evidence-based influencers’ and the ‘charlatans' tend to occupy the extreme ends of this continuum respectively, failing to aknowledge the individual contexts that shape public health policy and individual decisions.
I truly believe we could be entering a resistance era for human health and modern medicine if we could:
1. Drop our hubris and acknowledge the real problems that exist with many of our modern medical interventions.
2. Find a solution for systemically attaining the right socioeconomic preconditions needed for good health. Improve upon established sanitation practices (less toxic, more bio-compatible).
3. Educate individuals on how to eat and support various aspects of their health.
The missing link in human health can only be achieved through the effective integration of cutting-edge technology and modern medical paradigms with the intuitive, biological wisdom already present in nature. Unfortunately, the modern world isn't going to change quickly enough for people in Western society to get a leg up, which is why individual decisions around health matter so much.
Supporting your infant and child’s health
It’s essential to understand the aforementioned concepts so that you have a framework for making informed decisions. If you don’t grasp these ideas, none of the practical advice outlined in the rest of this article will serve you well in the long term.
With that being said, I’m sure you’re ready for me to get to the point and tell you what to do.
Many of the things mentioned in this article can be helpful for newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers and middle-aged children alike. These are particularly important for babies who were not breastfed or born via c-section. In fact, many of the strategies here can also be adopted by teenagers and or adults who meet the conditions above. While these may not be comprehensive solutions for restoring the microbiome as an adult (you really need the fungal protocol for that) they can be useful adjuncts
It’s important to understand that a lot of supplements and nutritional strategies we could use in adults and even younger children aren’t ideal for newborns and infants. So we’ll be covering some effective strategies applicable to all age groups.
Section 1: Restoring the infantile and young child’s microbiome — supplements for baby and mom
Safe supplements during pregnancy. (Always consult doctor first)
1.human milk oligosaccrides (for the the mother, newborn and all ages )
Human milk oligosaccharides (I’ll refer to them HMOs from here on out ) are naturally found in mothers breast milk, and are protective effects against various pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. In supplemental form, they are the safest and most broadly applicable supplement for newborns and infants and help to positive shape the immune system and microbiome. In some rare cases, they are actually added to infant formula (although these are often hard to find)
In pediatric populations, HMOs have been associated with reduced incidence of infections, including those caused by common neonatal pathogens. Their presence in breast milk is linked to lower rates of gastrointestinal infections and various respiratory illnesses in infants
The mechanisms through which HMOs exert these effects are fairly unique, and have direct interactions with pathogens, modulation of immune responses, and support of beneficial gut microbiota.
HMOs can essentially function as decoy receptors, preventing pathogens from adhering to epithelial cells. This is crucial because adhesion is a key step in the establishment of infections. By mimicking the glycan receptors that pathogens typically target, HMOs can bind to these pathogens and inhibit their ability to attach to host cells.
HMOs have also been shown to prevent the attachment of various bacteria to the intestinal lining, including:
Escherichia coli
Vibrio cholerae
Salmonella
Campylobacter jejuni
Helicobacter pylori
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Similarly, HMOs can inhibit viral infections by blocking the binding of viruses to their receptors. For instance, 2-fucosyllactose (a particular kind of HMO) has been identified as a decoy for norovirus, effectively preventing its attachment to host cells.
Numerous studies have highlighted the protective effects of HMOs against other viral pathogens as well! HMOs have direct antiviral activity against several viruses, including norovirus, HIV, and SARS-CoV-2. For example, 2-FL and 3-FL (different kinds of HMO’s) were found to inhibit the infection of Vero E6 cells by SARS pseudoviruses, and were particularly against the omicron variant
Did you know that poliovirus also typically enters the body via oral route and initially replicates in the GI, specifically in the oropharynx and multiplies in the intestinal mucosa and surrounding lymphoid tissues? HMO’s can help ‘beef up’ the intestinal barrier, and have numerous mechanism through which they may prevent the virus from moving into systemic circulation.
In infants with a healthy gut, a polio vaccine is *likely* unnecessary. You did read that correctly
certain sialylated HMOs have been shown to bind specifically to respiratory viruses as well , such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and get this… measles. In vivo studies demonstrated that 6’-SL could reduce the viral load of Influenza A H1N1, while 3-SL was effective against RSV.
HMOs play a significant role in modulating different ‘arms’ of the immune system as well, which is why they are such a key constituent in breast milk. They influence various immune cells, including macrophages and dendritic cells, promoting an anti-inflammatory response and enhancing immune tolerance. They are also anti-allergic
HMOs interact with toll-like receptors such as TLR5 and TLR9, which are a constituent for recognizing bacterial components and modulating immune responses. Human evidence also suggests that HMOs are present in the bloodstream, indicating they may interact with circulating immune cells beyond the gut.
Using HMO’s
In newborns and infants — if you can’t breastfeed, it’s best to use an actual formula containing HMO’s along with other nutrients like GOS, MFGH, DHA and other vitamins and minerals. This is the best way to aquire HMO’s. Kendamil is the brand I recommend

Ages 1 and up (including adults) — In babies, children and adults, a full serving (typically 1800mg) of HMO’s (I like the brand pure HMO) can be given. HMO’s are exceptionally well tolerated. I personally prefer the Layer origins brand. For ages 1-3, use their ‘HMO for kids’. Ages 3 and up, use their SuperHMO, which is a combination of 5 different kinds of HMO.

Breastfeeding mothers and any adult (male or female) — In breastfeeding mothers, you can supplement directly with HMO’s in order to improve the composition of HMO’s in your own breast milk. For this, I also recommend a full serving of the SuperHmo daily. Supplementing with HMO’s during pregnancy and breastfeeding is both safe and beneficial. Supplemental HMO’s during pregnancy will improve promotions and the transfer of these beneficial microorganisms to your baby. Adults can use HMO’s to improve their microbiome ans levels of keystone bacteria like bifido species.
2.Lactoferrin (for mother, newborn, infant and all ages)
Lactoferrin is a multifunctional glycoprotein found in high concentrations in human milk, particularly in colostrum. It plays a significant role in the immune defense of infants, especially in preventing infections — viral and bacterial. The mechanisms by which lactoferrin exerts its protective effects are diverse and fascinating
For one, lactoferrin binds to iron, which is essential for the growth of many bacteria. By sequestering iron, lactoferrin limits the availability of this nutrient to pathogens, thereby inhibiting their growth and proliferation. Lactoferrin exhibits direct antimicrobial properties against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It disrupts microbial cell membranes, leading to cell lysis and death. This effect is both local in the gut and systemic.
Lactoferrin also modulates the immune response by influencing the production of cytokines, which are signaling molecules that mediate and regulate immunity and inflammation. This helps in enhancing the immune response while preventing excessive inflammation. Lactoferrin enhances the activity of immune cells like neutrophils and natural killer cells, promoting their ability to respond to infections effectively. This compound is enhanced with other milk derived compounds like HMO.
Additionally lactoferrin promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria while inhibiting pathogenic species just like HMO’s do. Lactoferrin is unique because it’s both a prebiotic and a selective anti-microbial. Lactoferrin shares many similar benefits to HMO’s in the immunomodulation department.
Of particular interest is lactoferrin’s ability to prevent viral infections by blocking the attachment of viruses to host cells. It interacts with heparan sulfate proteoglycans on the cell surface, which are used by many viruses as entry points including, you guessed it, measles and polio.
For polio, several studies have shown that lactoferrin can inhibit replication
By binding to these sites, lactoferrin prevents the virus from anchoring and entering the cell. Studies have demonstrated that lactoferrin can inhibit various viruses, including influenza and coronaviruses as well, by interfering with their ability to infect host cells as mentioned.
Lactoferrin supplementation has been studied extensively in various clinical trials, particularly in preterm infants, where it has shown promise in reducing the incidence of late-onset sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis.
lactoferrin serves as a crucial component of the innate immune response in infants, offering protection against infections through its antimicrobial properties, immune modulation, prebiotic effects, and enhancement of gut barrier function. Its role in neonatal health should very clearly underscore the importance of breastfeeding. As well as the possible potential benefits of lactoferrin supplementation in vulnerable populations that haven’t been breastfed.
Using lactoferrin
Newborns: Research indicates that lactoferrin can be safely administered to newborns, particularly preterm infants. A study involving preterm infants with a birth weight of less than 1500 grams found that doses of up to 300 mg/kg/day were well tolerated without adverse effects. The study also highlighted that lactoferrin supplementation did not lead to significant complications, and all infants survived to discharge from the hospital.
A randomized trial on very low-birth-weight neonates suggested that a dosage of quite “100 mg of bovine lactoferrin per day is safe and effective in preventing late-onset sepsis”Another study confirmed that “lactoferrin supplementation at doses of 100 mg, 200 mg, and 300 mg per kg of body weight per day was safe, with no serious adverse events reported during the treatment period”. I think ideally, somewhere between 100-300mg of lactoferrin (in general) is plenty
In adults, toddlers and children and breastfeeding women — it appears that dosages ranging anywhere between 200-1000mg can be effective for children, adults and toddlers alike. Particularly for combating gastrointestinal infections. I think the 200-300 range probably makes the most since for toddlers and young children, while dosages ranging from 600-1000mg are likely a hit more ideal for adults, particularly pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Lactoferrin supplementation is likely not needed in breastfed children, although the mother can supplement with lactoferrin during both pregnancy and breastfeeding to improve the quality of lactoferrin in breast milk.

Bovine Colostrum (allergies, illness formula additive and post vaccination side effects )
Proline-rich polypeptides (which will be referred to as PRPs from here) primarily are derived from colostrum, and play a significant role in the health and development of infants. These peptides are crucial for enhancing immune function and supporting neurological development.
PRPs are known to modulate the immune system by promoting the activity of T-lymphocytes. They can stimulate the differentiation of t-cells into either helper t-cells or suppressor t-cells, which are essential for regulating immune balance and various responses. PRPs also provide passive immunity to infants. This is particularly important as newborns have immature immune systems. The immunoglobulins and bioactive peptides in colostrum, including PRPs, help protect against infections during the early stages of life.
The bioactive components of colostrum, including PRPs, contribute to the maturation of the gastrointestinal tract in infants. They create a favorable environment for the development of gut health, which is obviously essential for nutrient absorption and overall growth. Colostrum helps in preventing gastrointestinal infections and supports the establishment of a healthy gut microbiomes
Of particular importance are PRPs antimicrobial properties that help protect infants from gut pathogens. This is particularly important for preventing conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis, which can be life-threatening in premature infants. PRP are essentially able to ‘poke’ holes in bacterial membranes. You can almost think of them as safe, natural antibiotics.
