Hunter’s fingers tap out a restless melody on your back, his voice soft as he says, “You know I can’t talk about it.”
“I know,” you say, nose pressed firmly against the soft skin of his throat. “Doesn’t mean I can’t try.”
Hunter chuckles, the sound vibrating through your skull. “This is why I tried to stay away, you know. You get people to open up.”
“Is that bad?”
“It’s dangerous,” he says. “For everyone.”
A sound rattles from the forest – a familiar clinking of animal bones or tree branches or something worse. Hunter goes rabbit-still, his heartbeat picking up.
“𝗛⃥𝘦̸ can’t hear us in here,” you reassure.
Hunter doesn’t look convinced, dark eyes focused on the cabin window. On the woods beyond it.
“I should go,” he says, already reaching for his shirt. “I need to prep for breakfast.”
You don’t argue. You curl into the bedcovers and watch as the man practically flees the cabin.
