Typically when someone brings me an old chandelier or luminary that has been hanging in a long forgotten place, they try to clean it up a little bit, so when one hit my desk still dripping in wax with a leather strap affixed to the back, well I was a bit confused. Once I saw what it could do though, I quickly understood that this was far more than a dusty old lighting fixture, this was something special in the hands of the right adventurer. I made a few modifications of my own, but I do wonder how such a thing could come about.

Design notes from Matthew:
We did a weapon a few months back that was an axe coated in wax and honestly I’ve been unable to get the aesthetic out of my mind. I wanted to return to that theme and make something else to go along with the theme. We already had a limited idea down for what we were going to do this month for the item and creature combo, but thankfully I caught Fernando before he really started on it and we changed things around into this.
When creating a shield, weapon, armor, so on, one of the best things you can do is keep it in the theme. It’s odd for a set of boots to mess with defenses or for gloves to give bonus to movement speed. There’s an expected benefit that comes with each piece of gear and I think it’s a much better practice to write within those expected constraints rather than always branching outside of them. That’s how I landed on disarm for this shield’s special trait as it’s a form of active defense.
Disarming only exists as a feat or an optional rule in 5E, so I opted to not pull in the optional rule assuming it is used by everyone and instead wrote a new rule for it within the item that lets you wrestle the weapon away. Sometimes rewriting is the best option as it turns out. For PF2E, thankfully disarming is already defined and I just needed to give this shield some special abilities like disarming without a free hand. Easy enough.
Spring is picking up in my part of the world and it’s arriving just in time to pick my spirits up a bit. It’s been another wonderful month of creation and I’m excited to share even more with you all today. We’ll be releasing the Wick Walker that goes along with this item in just a few hours so look forward to that!
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
