🕑 Added 2024-07-25 17:00:07 +0000 UTCGreetings Adventurers,
We're approaching the end of July and as our next release day will be on August 1st, that means it's also time to bring you our One More Thing for the month! We're big fans of puns here at AB in case you haven't realized and well, this one was just too good to pass up. It's a silly creation, but one that I hope you can find some use for in a big battle some day!
As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.
Design notes from Matthew:
This one all started with the name as you could imagine. We had wanted to create a siege creature, something that could be used to batter down walls and work its way past fortifications. What we realized pretty quickly is that it's hard to put a new spin on the standard siege creatures that people thing about like ogres, giants, and other large beings. A lot of those have been done and they are known quantities. Something we could do though is bring something a bit more odd to the table.
When designing the actual mechanics, Meat Shield was by far my favorite bit of writing to go with this creature on both of the systems. I haven't seen much of something like this being used in 5E or PF2E so I was considering what mechanic could allow it to happen. Grabbing/Grappling seemed like the perfect way to open this up and from there it was all a matter of writing how the reaction could be used. It will make for a surprising moment in any campaign and I'd love to see the looks on your party's faces when you use it.
Outside of that, I knew that mobility was going to be the name of the game here. I needed the creature to move around at very high speeds to keep its defenses up. That's why I gave it a number of charge and stride abilities so that the battlefield never feels stagnant when this thing is rampaging about.
It's been wonderful getting to continue to design these One More Thing releases each month. They really give me an opportunity to open up my design skills and create things that are just a bit outside of the norm. It also opens up new ideas for me as well. Don't be surprised if you see the meat shield mechanic come back around in a player option or magic item of the future!
