I’m not saying that the folks who crafted this saddle weren’t taking the animal’s safety into concern, I’m just saying that perhaps someone should have tested how a horse would react to suddenly flying. I can absolutely see the desire for the adventurer, but how does the creature feel about it? Well hopefully all ends up well when they take to the skies for the first time. I know if I were to suddenly start flying though, I’d have some questions. Hopefully this saddle can help those who need to get around a little easier if nothing else.

Design notes from Matthew:
The design notes on this one are going to be a bit hard to write as the idea was the execution. Fernando came up with this one basically on a whim. The idea was “what if there was a saddle that could make any mount fly” and that was about as far as it needed to go. I knew it was a cool idea and wanted to execute it. I can go into a bit more detail on each system though.
For the 5E variant, I felt like I needed an upgraded version of the fly spell for this. The original being concentration and only lasting for 10 minutes meant that it would be usable for one combat in most situations. I wanted to extend that a bit and give the option for strategic use of it once per day. Putting the once per day restriction on was mostly to stop folks from just turning it on and off whenever they want. I mean most outdoor encounters with nonflying enemies could be trivialized if you had it all the time.
In the PF2E version I’m already a fan of how their fly spell mechanic works. The heightened version pretty much already did what I needed it too so I went to pull the mechanics mostly from that and then obviously some information to provide limiting factors of once per day. It still ends up being powerful, but not quite as powerful as the spell due to the daily limit.
Fernando and I had a great ideation session the other day where we planned out the next two months of content and I have to say it was a great exercise and something I want to do again in the future. It seems like he and I just bounce off one another quite well. What I’m saying is the next two months of releases are looking amazing (and at times hilarious).
