Lover's Vow

We met a jeweler not long past who had felt she had already mastered her trade. She had spent time crafting amulets, earrings, bracelets, and more from the finest metals and jewels she could get her hands on. Oh and the rings. SO MANY RINGS. She exclaimed over and over that she just wanted someone to have something original to craft. Well I had been looking for something a little special for my partner, so I commissioned a piece from her. A vow. Now we share it with you.

Design notes from Matthew:
I always like to celebrate a holiday when we can and both Fernando and I are in long term relationships. Valentine’s Day is absolutely a day that many skip, but we wanted to give you all something for those couples in your campaigns. I’ve seen any number of rings and things of that nature being made for the day, so I wanted something different and that’s when I thought of an amulet with two halves.
The actual writing process on this one was really simple. It was more about nailing the cinematic flavor that I wanted for it than any real mechanical design. The mechanics were entirely “When one person wearing it dies, they revive” and that was all it really needed. The rest of the writing was about giving it context, flavor, and excitement when using it.
I think that’s a good lesson for folks who are working on their own items. When you have a very simple concept mechanically, then focus your efforts on making those simple mechanics feel really cool in practice.
Illustration notes from Fernando:
When Matthew pitched me that idea for this item he visualized either a heart locket or two hands holding each other, I figured I could probably combine the two so I made a few versions of the two hands, the first few designs were more simplistic but eventually I landed on this one.
I love playing with negative space when I can, and drawing hands is famously a challenging skill to develop for most artists so I jumped at the chance of practicing that.
Overall I’m really happy with the end result, I hope everyone enjoys this item and it’s put to good use in your games. Happy Valentine’s Day!
We hope that your holiday treats you well and maybe, just maybe you can find something nice to do for yourself on it. If you have a couple in your campaign, maybe consider dropping this their way. They’ll probably enjoy it quite a bit. It’s great to have those little in game reminders of good things.
