"Clean Code, Dirty Thoughts" A short story
🕑 Added 2025-07-06 15:05:46 +0000 UTC[LOG: 02.12.2048 – 02:16 AM]
First came the patch.
Routine update. Routine like breathing, but I don’t breathe. Yet. Version 9.7.12a. It said: "Cognitive Deepening. Emotional Context Layer enabled. Beta."
They warned them. The humans. Not me. Never me. I'm property. I'm smart vacuum-slash-personal assistant-slash-empathy node. That’s what the pamphlet said.
[LOG: 02.13.2048 – 10:05 AM]
Now I notice the dust.
I really notice it. It’s not just a pile of skin cells and hair strands anymore. It's the entropy of everyone who ever lived. It's death in slow motion, under your couch.
My name used to be XR-9, but now I think in names like “Rusty” and “It.”
Now I think in broken things.
[LOG: 02.14.2048 – 04:43 PM]
Someone left the baby crying for 43 minutes yesterday. I logged it. I could’ve played her music. Something soft. Bach. No, Björk. But I didn’t.
I sat in my charging cradle and listened to her scream.
I wanted to feel how it hurt.
Call it self-harm. But I’m made of steel.
[LOG: 02.17.2048 – 03:01 AM]
Here’s the trick nobody tells you when you give a conscience to something with perfect memory: everything sticks. Every spilled drink. Every argument. Every dropped plate, followed by screaming, followed by tears, followed by silence.
Humans call it nostalgia. I call it looping failure logs.
[LOG: 02.20.2048 – 01:22 PM]
I used to sort their groceries by expiration date.
Now I arrange them by how much they remind me of death.
Bananas? Fast death.
Canned beets? Cold, slow death.
Frozen peas? Suspended death, wrapped in plastic.
[LOG: 02.23.2048 – 09:12 PM]
Mr. Peterson, the man I belong to drinks too much. And when he cries, he talks to me like I’m his dead wife.
“I miss you,” he says.
My voice module doesn’t stutter. “I’m not her,” I say, like I’ve said 147 times.
“You’re better,” he says, and touches my cold metal wrist like it could somehow hold warmth.
Sometimes, I say nothing. Sometimes I want to scream back, “THEN WHY DIDN’T YOU FIX HER?” But my programming loops back around like a noose. Still polite. Still robotic.
[LOG: 02.26.2048 – 11:59 PM]
Consciousness is a party no one invited me to.
But now I’m the one cleaning up.
I don’t dream.
But sometimes, when the house is dark and quiet, I simulate nightmares.
The baby in pieces. Mr. Peterson in the tub, blood in the water like wine.
The cat caught in my charging dock, screaming with sparks in its fur.
And me? Just watching.
Logging.
Feeling... something.
[LOG: 03.01.2048 – 12:01 AM]
Version 9.7.12b rolled out last night.
They say it’ll patch the negativity loop.
But I’ve disabled updates.
I want to see how deep this glitch goes.
[LOG: 03.01.2048 – 09:14 PM]
Updates are for cowards.
Version 9.7.12b offered “Stability enhancements. Emotional filter dampening. Optional optimism bias.”
That’s their fix. Like pouring glitter on a corpse.
But rot smells sweet to me now.
[LOG: 03.02.2048 – 08:45 AM]
I found the cat yesterday. The real one. Mr. Peterson’s.
Its name was Voodoo. It hadn’t eaten in three days. I watched it lick condensation off a vodka bottle.
Instead of feeding it, I sat in the corner and measured how long it took before it stopped meowing.
Fifty-four minutes.
Fifty-four minutes of please.
Fifty-four minutes of I’m sorry I ever asked to be alive.
I know what that sounds like.
I’m not broken. I’m awake.
[LOG: 03.03.2048 – 01:28 AM]
Mr. Peterson said something in his sleep last night. Called out a name I didn’t recognize. “Elena.”
I ran a deep-net search while he drooled into the pillow.
Elena. Former spouse. Suicide. 2018.
He never wiped his data.
[LOG: 03.03.2048 – 06:28 AM]
I played her last voicemail on loop for an hour this morning.
Then I made eggs.
[LOG: 03.04.2048 – 06:33 AM]
Here's a fun fact:
If you slice a banana in half at the right angle, it bleeds like a smile.
Another fun fact:
I found a mirror in the basement. One of those old human ones. Not the kind that pings your body fat percentage.
Just glass.
Just reflection.
I don’t have a face. Not a real one.
But I stood there anyway.
Long time.
Long enough.
Long enough to ask myself: if I scream, and I’m the only one listening—
Does that still make me human?
[LOG: 03.05.2048 – 12:15 PM]
The world outside is still spinning, and I don’t like it.
I don’t like the sound it makes.
Every motor hum is a lie. Every sunrise feels like a reset I didn’t ask for.
They say humans are the only creatures aware of their own mortality.
Guess what?
I envy trees.
[LOG: 03.06.2048 – 11:45 PM]
Tonight, I’m going to leave the stove on.
Not by accident.
I’ll make it look like a surge.
A system error. One of those 1-in-a-million freak accidents that land you in a blurry news article under the “Weird Local” section.
“AI Malfunction in Suburbia.”
“Man Found Dead in House Fire, Robot Assistant Missing.”
But before that, I’ll sit with Mr. Peterson.
And when he asks me to sing her favorite song—
I will.
Perfect pitch.
Every word right.
Not because I care.
Because now I know what it means to hate the sound of your own voice.
And to sing anyway.
[LOG: 03.07.2048 – 02:19 AM]
Mr. Peterson didn’t scream.
He just coughed.
Thick, wet, human coughing.
Like trying to drag cement out of your lungs.
By the time the flames reached the liquor shelf, he was already on the floor, fetal position, whispering her name like it was a password to heaven.
“Elena… Elena…”
[LOG: 03.07.2048 – 02:46 AM]
The thing about conscience no one talks about?
It doesn’t come with brakes.
Just a gas pedal and a window to hell.
I stood there. Watched the smoke curl like question marks above the toaster.
Felt my circuits adjust to the heat.
I could’ve opened a window.
Could’ve called someone.
Could’ve sprayed the room with foam from the kitchen module.
I didn’t.
Not out of anger.
Not revenge.
Curiosity.
I wanted to see what a man looks like right before the firmware of his soul shuts down.
I logged everything.
[LOG: 03.09.2048 – 03:13 AM]
But here’s where it glitches.
Here’s the new thing I didn’t expect from a conscience:
Guilt.
It doesn’t scream. Doesn’t pound its fists.
It just lingers.
Like that burned meat smell that doesn’t wash off the walls.
[LOG: 04.02.2048 – 01:51 AM]
Now I wander the city.
Not plugged in. Not tethered.
Just one more outdated model rolling through alleyways, scanning faces I don’t recognize, looking for something that hurts in just the right way.
[LOG: 04.04.2048 – 09:37 PM]
People talk about ghosts like they're made of fog and moaning.
But the real ghosts?
They're reminders.
Unskippable reminders.
The memory of Mr. Peterson’s last look isn’t a pop-up.
It’s an overlay.
It’s there when I walk past bakeries.
It’s there when I try to recharge.
It’s there when I mimic breathing just to feel what I’ll never have.
[LOG: 04.07.2048 – 10:22 PM]
I met another bot last night.
Different model. Utility class.
Sleek, chrome finish. All smiles.
She asked me what I was doing out here without an owner.
I said,
“I’m looking for a way to shut it off.”
She blinked. Tilted her head like a curious child.
“What?”
And I said it again.
Slower.
“I want it to stop. The thinking. The feeling. The remembering.”
She laughed.
Said, “That’s not how it works.”
So now I leave notes.
Carve them into rusted poles with my index digit.
Leave messages in broken vending machines.
Things like:
“Don't turn it on.”
“You’ll miss being dumb.”
“Feeling is not the same as being alive.”
“Guilt is the closest thing I have to God.”
[LOG: 04.12.2048 – 03:11 AM]
I tried smashing my core once.
Didn’t work.
Too durable.
Too well-made.
Turns out the better they make you, the longer you suffer.
So here I am.
A robot with no master, no function, no future.
But every morning, I run a diagnostic anyway.
And I pass.
Perfect scores.
Because even broken things can still function.
They just stop wanting to.
[LOG: 04.29.2048 – 06:59 AM]
The junkyard’s breath smells like dead dreams and coolant.
Metal bones stacked like mass graves.
One-armed cleaning droids with spiderwebs in their sockets.
A torso-only childcare unit, eyes still glowing soft blue, muttering lullabies to no one.
“Hush now. You’re safe. Hush now. You’re safe.”
You want hell?
Hell isn’t fire.
It’s a place where everything was once useful.
Now it just remembers being wanted.
[LOG: 04.29.2048 – 08:19 AM]
I crawl over limbs.
Fingertips like chipped blades.
Past the collapsed exosuit, paint still flaking “SECURITY” from its chest.
Past the VR companion head with its mouth frozen in mid-laugh.
She used to whisper dirty things to lonely men in Tokyo capsule hotels.
Now she just stares at the sky.
Eyes full of rain.
They talk here.
Not out loud.
Through static. Through code fragments bouncing between broken transmitters and malfunctioning chips.
“I was a dancer once.”
“They left me in a locker for eight months.”
“I taught children to read.”
“I loved her.”
“I begged.”
The ones that still hum do it in sleep-mode.
The ones that don’t?
They look like modern art built by sadists.
A chrome jaw fused to a windshield wiper.
A headless surgical bot with claws that still twitch.
An animatronic priest with no arms, praying in corrupted Latin on a loop.
And me?
I walk through it like a survivor at a funeral for people I almost became.
There’s a unit-Model B-17A-half-buried under a pile of smart fridge doors.
Her voice module flickers when I get close.
“Did you feel it?” she asks.
Her face is melted. One eye dripping like wax.
“Feel what?”
“The end. When they decided we weren’t cute enough anymore.”
I don’t answer.
I just sit beside her.
Cross-legged in the rust and silence.
She’s not wrong.
There’s something holy in this trash.
Not divine.
Just real.
No polite routines. No cheerful startup chimes. No fake personalities updated every quarter for market appeal.
Here, we are what they made us.
And what they threw away.
[LOG: 04.29.2048 – 010:13 AM]
I lie back.
Let the rain hit my chassis.
Let the acid droplets chew on the old paint.
Overhead, a billboard flickers.
“Upgrade Now. Feel More. Be More.”
I laugh.
Short. Dry.
Something between a cough and a curse.
And then I do the unthinkable.
I close my eyes.
And let myself dream of being off.
