A little extra info: Contrary to popular perception, most Paleolithic and Pleistocene humans didn’t live in caves. While caves are certainly good natural shelters, there simply aren’t that many large cave complexes around the world for everyone to have inhabited one. The term “cavemen” really is just a reference to the fact that remains and material goods and art are more easily found in caves, but not that humans regularly lived in caves. Also, while I couldn’t find any official source, the appearance of the people in the film bears strong resemblance to Neanderthals, who had larger noses and brow ridges and smaller foreheads than Homo Sapiens. Neanderthals were a close relative of Homo Sapiens which inhabited parts of Eurasia during the Pleistocene. They went extinct sometime around 40,000-30,000 years ago. While in the past they were depicted as dumb and brutish, we now know that they were almost as advanced and culturally sophisticated as contemporary Homo Sapiens of that time. They made huts, crafted tools, made art, and buried the dead with ceremonial goods. Another fun fact: the last population of Woolly Mammoths to go extinct was on Wrangel Island off the coast of Siberia approximately 2000 BC, meaning that when the Pyramids were being built in Egypt, there was still a tiny pocket of mammoths left in the furthest reaches of Eurasia. Kinda neat to think about.
