Beta Testing: Suntanning Fixes
🕑 Added 2025-02-12 23:40:51 +0000 UTCI've been looking at suntanning quite a lot recently and trying to arrive at a solution to the entire confusing issue - a way for sims to tan correctly, whether they're wearing clothes or nothing at all.
In the past, I've tried to get around this issue with chests/breasts by using an Add-on that removes their textures and allows you to add an optional skin overlay in CAS to allow the sim to tan fully. I never offered this for penises, because soft and hard versions have different textures and relying on overlays wouldn't have worked. The new way of tanning in this beta test removes the need for a textureless add-on or overlays and lets your sims tan fully nude!
Working on this has been eye-opening, because I learned some stuff about the tanning system I didn't know and it helped me understand how it works a little bit better. Well, maybe that's a stretch - but at least there are some things I know to do or not to do, even if I don't 100% understand why lol.
The reason this is a beta test is because I need to make sure that it's working before I push it out to all of my patrons. So this test is open for my higher tier patrons, and I'd be very grateful to anyone who wants to test and give feedback.
This fix is designed to allow your sims to tan fully nude and for the tan to show up properly. Sims can still get tanlines if they tan wearing any clothing that covers the appropriate areas (such as my CC clothes, or clothing from my Suntanning Fix override), but when nude, the tan should cover their entire body.
HOW DOES THE BETA WORK?
1) I've edited skintone tanning overlays to make sure they fully cover the whole body. I'm still investigating skintone burnt overlays, which are being a little troublesome, but hopefully I can get those to work as well.
2) For nude suntanning to work, the game needs any CAS default nude parts - such as my default SimplePenis or the default WW penis - to have no texture. For testing purposes, I'm including a file that overrides the WW penis texture and removes my SimplePenis CAS default completely. I don't like to alter other creators' work if it can be avoided, but in this case it appears to be necessary to make the suntanning work.
3) If you put on a CAS version of any of the penises, the game will still see this as clothing and the penis won't tan. In order to tan nude, you should use WW's Body Selector and remove the sim's clothing before suntanning.
I'd like to make a CAS default available, but it'll probably need to be textureless and I'm still brainstorming how I want to approach that issue (possibly a standalone with an optional overlay just to use in CAS for testing colors, body hair, etc).
INSTALLATION NOTES
There are two files: a SimplePenisTanning file, and a version of my base penis file without a CAS Default called simdulgence_SimplePenis2_BaseNoDefault.
In order to test, you'll need to remove the existing SimplePenis2_Base file from your /Mods location and put the BaseNoDefault file in there instead. None of your sims will lose their penises, because all of the other data remains exactly the same.
I think that covers it (although I'll suddenly remember something and have to edit the post lol). I'd appreciate any feedback on how you find the tanning works for you, how you feel about the CAS default issue, or any other questions or comments you want to share. If I move forward with this system for tanning, I may be able to expand to do the same for breasts/chests/vaginas (provided those all work the same way).

Looking at the Basic Burns mod, I don't think it would cause any conflict with this - if a sim is nude and goes outside, being in the sun will cause their genitals to tan correctly. Obviously if your sim has clothes on, the penis won't tan as long as the clothing has texture in the overflow area where I put genital textures - most official clothes don't have texture there, but I did put out an override for some official clothing to help with this (mostly swimwear and I can add more items to that file). Re: the CAS default, I don't think there's going to be a way to have a textured default penis and allow the tans to work, but I'm looking into it still and a temporary overlay is a possible back-up option if needed. Also, I can easily make you a default that's uncut or retracted for you to use in your game. Using this mod, you could just select a body part and it should tan correctly without the need for adding texture overlays! I do like having the CAS default, but I think the trade-off of it being simpler to give your sims a body part and for it to tan right without the fuss of overlays in CAS is pretty good.

Exciting! If I'm reading this right, I can finally use Kuttoe's Basic Burns now, since any clothing would work with suntanning and nude parts. I really miss your CAS default, though! (Even if I'd prefer a more natural uncut or retracted CAS default). Wouldn't it also mean that I can select different body parts of yours without requiring a corresponding texture overlay? That's exciting, less clutter in CAS and I can assign body parts without needing to jump into CAS as often.
