A small note on the science in chapter 62 (I am not sure if author reads comments on old chapters). Marchhand should be able to immediately distinguish gravity and centrifugal forces. In fact a normal human walking in such conditions should be able to notice as well. March should have electronic accelerometers and gyroscopes. The coriolis forces from the rotating station should be detected on March's sensors, even if Perry isn't able to notice the difference. Also, if they have reactors that produce energy, they have nuclear bombs, though I wouldn't expect Perry to know that off the bat. Nuclear physics theory came out in the 30s, reactors for enriching fuel and nuclear bombs in the 40s and the first power generation was in the early 50s.

FTL is considered to be impossible by the overwhelming majority of physicists, because FTL signalling of any kind violates the standard model, quantum information theory, you name it. The fact that there are solutions of the GR field equations which allow for for an Alcubierre-style bubble does not necessarily mean this is physical.

Alexander Wales

The Alcubierre drive requires "exotic matter", which might not exist, and is "apparent" or "effective" FTL rather than "true" FTL. With an Alcubierre drive, the ship is still moving slower-than-light with respect to its locally distorted spacetime. I guess you can take Perry's statement as being 1) pessimism 2) misunderstanding or 3) a reflection of the truth, depending on your preference. But to quote Arthur C. Clarke, "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong." So I guess never say never.

Philippe Boulanger

BTW, maybe that is intentional (such as Perry having not completely accurate knowledge from is original Earth), but if Perry is from our Earth, it is false that it is impossible to have FTL travel. We have many theoretical models, that seems to works with our known physic, that would enable FTL travel. It is a serious research field in physic but narrow (not many physicists work on that). In pratique we are not there yet but it's conceived to be feasible in some future. You can search "alcubierre drive" or "warp drive" for one such theoretical method.
