Which is a detrimental effect of burning away a mage's potential, just like the common trope of burning out. This is a metaphysical damage similar to an athlete destroying their muscles to finish a race. But the hounds regenerate and that also includes their mana channels and core.
Not all of the soldiers were able to hide behind Aegis. The mana infused fires overwhelms their senses as does the fear that comes from narrowly escaping with one's life. Their friends have been taken by one of their own. They have been informed of what they may find, but still it was difficult for them to have been prepared.
