(The reasoning was i was on a road trip with my partner and friend and we did the one shots/class action/bag it or tag it and then we were too close to home to start the full campaign or childrens adventure but i realized we could do the interlude and like wow am i glad i did! ) this is my favorite story/media/entertainment i think naybe ever! 💜

I was "lucky" enough that when and where I was deployed we saw very little person to person action, but we saw a lot of indirect action. I have never heard a war scene described in a way that was this true to the experience. I've listened to this episode a couple times now and I'm still just blown away by the gravity and accuracy of the scene.

Guys I think I ran the most brutal DND session I have ever run in my 2 years as a DM… I knew it was going to be so brutal so instead of doing terrible things to their beloved PCs, instead I had my players inhabit NPC characters in a dream ( it’s kinda convoluted so I’m not going to explain). Wars waged by magical nations is truly a frightening thing, once you think about it at all. This episode helped me do that, and I inflicted that on my players. I obviously stole the luck check to cap the higher number my players could roll. The first turn was mostly introductions and setting the scene. Once the war began I rolls a 3… then a NAT 1!!! Safe to say the players basically had no agency. Well that’s not correct. They had agency, I reminded them that in any other day they would have succeeded, maybe even supernaturally so, but this was not any other day. It was felt terrible to tell a Cleric of Nature that Nature itself no longer wanted to listen to them, or a lieutenant was so horrified by the hurt he caused he was unable to give anymore commands… Yeah I don’t recommend doing this to your players unless you know what you are doing. And I for sure did not. Good thing I didn’t do this to their PCs. Lol

Brennan's plan probably would have been to succinctly describe how the stories of three vivid lives were cut off arbitrarily in the horror of war, no different from the thousands of other equally vivid lives extinguished in the episode. Then maybe we jump ahead to the story's epilogue as The Man in Black, Sir Curran, the remnants of the Coven of Elders, and the forces of Rhuve tear the tower down. It's an interesting question, though, because Brennan's repeatedly stressed "TPKs generally result from a party disagreeing on what to do" and the lesson here looks like it would have been saying "TPKs sometimes result from a Lovecraftian flesh monster unilaterally deciding to kill you, communication doesn't matter, he big"

I think the Dreadnaughts themselves perhaps aren't as intelligent as the things they carry- i wouldn't be surprised if it just alighted upon the biggest moving mass. Imo, a big splash of darkness amidst a battle of flashy armor and magic may stand out more on the ground. But it also means there's a bigger target and, as evident, more room to dodge within.

I love how much they got me to identify with Suvi by actually taking us to the Citadel for Arc 2. Like, one second I’m surrounded by civilians doing awesome research and enjoying yummy sandwiches in an incredible wizardpunk city. Then the Citadel is *taking children* and it’s an atrocity and I want to burn things. Then I’m surrounded by literal nightmares and Brennan keeps saying the word “fleshcraft” and boy do I hate THAT. So I find myself accidentally cheering for the Citadel again. And then they’ve got an effing dragon chained THROUGH ITS CHEEKS and that’s horrifying. And then Steel is Suvi’s MOM and she is saving her own people, but she is also committing the single most upsetting act of magic I have ever seen. The emotional ups and downs of all this are crazy.

Wow, what an episode! But I think we sorta transitioned out of the world of DnD when it came to this fight. Like, I know this is heavily based on a Gibli esque anime, but the early stages, you could still guess what most of the spells were or what skills people were using. But Steel, with time stop, uses a spell that not automatically kills an enemy but all of their descendants?! That's when I knew we transition out of the realm of just dnd and into straight fantasy. Don't get me wrong, that is awesome in some ways, but then it definitely puts our players at a disadvantage since they will largely be tied to their class features, and yet we got npc's that can wipe out your entire lineage by just killing you LOL.

I thought Caliah’s shield was +3 (for a total of +5), which would mean he either has a breastplate and no Dex, or else some other combo adding up to 4. i super loved how clear Brennan makes the "virtuous cycle" between holding power and mobilising resources a lot of the time in d&d, people seem to abstract away the magic economy — the description of the precious metals in the airship at the top of the episode, with its link to spell components and the reminder that costly items (and the implied work/sacrifice) lead to strength ... just masterful, using this part of the storytelling framework that's often left out, to instil in us a sense of awe and horrific grandeur from the first minute. amazing, Brennan i have a question: Suvi was sheltered by her privileged role -- how much of her current shock is a realisation, that her power/comfort/ease has often come at someone else's expense, and the sacrifices have not always been willing?

Suvi was also given some at the Citadel, but that also originated from the Glass Coronet. In Chapter 1 they met a very pale half-Spirit little girl named Ghost who was very talented at enchanting objects- she made a candle construct named Flicker. She also had the innate ability because of her half-Spiritness to- rather ironically- disenchant objects by touching them. Suvi gave her a referral to be trained as an Artificer by the Citadel. She later learned that Ghost was not with the Citadel but in a city called Carrow with the Glass Coronet. They just learned that the dispelling agent that the Glass Coronet produces and uses is in fact made of Ghost’s blood.

I feel like it might be bad/lead to more internal conflict that neither Ame nor Eursalan saw 1) what Steel is capable of, and; 2) what can happen if someone knows your true name. Like, I understand that a lot of Suvi’s fear of Steel is from a familial perspective, but to me, this incident either confirms deep seated fears that Suvi has never actively expressed or contended with or adds a new bunch of reasons why her fear of Steel finding her is a justified, if not for herself, then for her friends.

I think when Suvi was stammering over her words about the staff of the wizard she killed, after it turned out that she recognised him, Eursulon decided that either that he couldn't accept any risk of dual loyalty, or that she wasn't in any condition to fight. He's also very emotional when he says it, but "if what you carry would slow you down, I would leave you here" is just a statement of desire that Suvi then acts on. If she thought she was fine, she could've gone, but she wasn't. 😭

Y’all’s sound design is the absolute peak that everyone should aim for in this space. Great moves from all the players showing how they have moved forward but also how they still need to change. Also love all the terrifying monsters that the sorcerers are bringing into this world. The obvious pain and horror they commit upon their own people to make these creatures. And how it doesn’t even remotely matter because the citadel will go farther. They will clean their act up a little more, but they’re going to go deeper and farther and pull out all the stops for this war. Steel is terrifying in a way that is amazing. I can’t wait for Suvis eventual confrontation when she has had more time to process.

There's so much I want to say about this episode because the words and emotions and sound design and editing were absolutely phenomenal but the one moment that really wrecked me was the distillation of Ghost's brilliant mind and talents and gifts down into a spell component. There’s a moment in this episode that i think perfectly captures how the characters relate to each other: Ame: “We’ll save her. We have to save the children first. We will, it’s okay.” Suvi: “I don’t need to be comforted.” Ame: “That was for me.” Eursulon: “Forward, then.” I just love how each of the characters voices the state of mind that has driven them throughout this arc. The fact that such a small moment can convey so much about them speaks volumes to the love of the players for each other and for their craft. I adore this show.

Those lightning sound effects were incredible. Tragic revelation about ghost, they found her in a bad situation and unintentionally sent her into something even worse. The dreadnoughts are everything I wanted them to be. The epiphany intro was so cool, I imagined it like a black and white recording of aircraft carriers being constructed for WW2, charismatic and patriotic contrasted with the brutality of war. The 5000 damage volley of magic bolts was breathtaking. Brennan sure has a creative mindscape

For the sound team: good lord that was amazing. I was listening to it in the dark: this is theater of the mind, and theaters are usually dark, and we had 4 performers and sound design that totally illuminated that screen. Once more: good. lord. Outstanding. Maybe I ask this again in the season wrapup, but I want to know more about what musical traditions you were pulling on for Gauthamine war music. The Citadel war music pulled on the fanfares and marches I'm familiar with, which are militaristic and I think European-origin (I don't know that for a fact, it's just the association I make when I hear that are 'Roman fanfare' and 'traditional European march instrumentation'). It oscillated between dire and joyous fanfare this episode. The Gauthamine chants - again, to my ears - tended to stay at a single somber note. I don't mean this as a critique at all - any seemingly odd sound choices in this campaign have been unfailingly sublime in their reasoning - so I just want to know either whether that Gauthamine music conveys that same celebration in a way my ears aren't trained to pick up in a musical tradition I'm not accustomed to, or whether that continuation of the same somber chant is indicative of some cultural aspect of Gauthami.

Wowowow those last few minutes really unfolded like a game of chess. A piece moves and you think the game is going one way, but suddenly there’s an opening for your opponent and you watch that piece get taken. Then their growing horror as they realize you made a sacrifice play and take their queen. Incredible.

The mechanics put into play where gripping and established a sense of unparalleled tension. The music is INCREDIBLE. So many incredible story beats. There are twentieth level wizards Then there are archmages And then there’s the sword of the fucking citadel (I’m aware that was probably a ritual researched for ages and done by a bunch of wizards at the same time but like STEEL IS SUCH A BADASS) (They run into a wizard who can cast a 9th level spell which implies they’re at least level 17, it’s likely the war effort has encourage power leveling with maybe less known spells so they can field more wizards, we know a lot of Tomori are ninth level spells, so like high level wizards have to be common but I assume a lot of them don’t fully know their stuff)

I have felt things that real life has not made me feel. The first five minutes of this episode are the best and most effective portrayal of the horrors of war that I have ever seen (heard I guess). I'm literally only twenty five minutes in and I'm already blown away and incredibly grateful for this gift from the team today. it's also SO mindblowing that it has made me... frankly a little upset. not at the crew or episode, but how they're treated on here when things get a lil more time in the oven for the special sauce flavors to get to know each other. genuinely. not to be a keyboard warrior. I almost never comment in spaces like this, but this is deeply important to me: i need everyone who was impatient about this episode to apologize for their attitude right now. yall pay less than a fancy cup of coffee worth of US Dollars per month and LIFECHANGING storytelling and GENRE DEFINING sound fx and scoring come out of it, more than monthly. also the storytelling part could be free if you didn't want to pay for the extras. we're genuinely watching fantasy literature and radio theater history being made before our eyes. go listen to the episode and then tell me with your whole chest that "potentially getting triple postponed sucks" when an episode of your show isn't waiting for you like a breakfast in bed as soon as you wake up. I do my best to remain positive here but genuinely the weaponized entitlement and disappointment is unbecoming and I *insist* that our community here not normalize it. comments like "i need my hit" and "kind of disappointed this is a consistent issue" and "where is it???" are rude. this is a passion project built by incredibly busy professionals. act adult. those are all direct quotes from the last 2.5hrs of comments on the "scuze us for one more quick delay" post. this type of interaction is one thing when it's on the discord. it's still uncouth, but whatever, cast and crew can choose to engage or disengage from that platform whenever. it's DIFFERENT when it's on the platform that directly pays the cast and crew. this is not a space that those who make the show can easily escape from, and it functions as a library for their past work, making browsing through it potentially very uncomfortable if attitudes aren't kept in check. additionally, when long-term subscribers are unnecessarily negative in comments sections, it reflects poorly on the Patreon system as a whole, likely discouraging new members. don't do that. be better. (thanks to all who were patient and kind, yall were solidly in the majority of commenters and your enjoyment of this story continues to bring me a type of community joy that I deeply appreciate.)
