After we recorded episode 44, Aabria had some questions for Brennan about what exactly was in those spellbooks she found on the bodies of the drowned guildmages. We thought, "Might as well jump back in the studio and have that convo on mic in case it turns out to be interesting for our dear patrons," and reader? We think it is. And so here is a little vignette of what exactly the wizard Sky gets up to while the shapechangers slumber nearby.

An argument in support of doing this sort of thing for every class, especially sorcerers and warlocks: it really, really helps emphasize the nature of the class's relationship with magic. Sorcerers practicing spellcasting is unlocking new mutant powers, basically. Unlike Wizards, they need to be in a situation that's more improvisational than practical, just twiddling on the keys of their magic and seeing what takes form. For Warlocks, there's a couple different shades. For those in service relationships, I like to assign them glib little prophecies which are clues to the magic they have unlocked. For those in more adversarial relationships, you can come up with a hundred and one ways they are "stealing" more magic from their Patron, and the sort of evolution of that relationship as a result. It only really doesn't work for the "knows all their spells" classes, your clerics and druids. Though I had a great star Druid player once who actually used astrology and constellations to justify their spell lists, which I thought was awesome.

The same as people who don't get the best case for their phone. "Oh I'll be careful with it, obviously I'll never get it near water" and then an accident happens. They've enchanted the binding to be super reinforced and anti-ripping spells on the paper itself, like getting a screen protector. Even if someone spills a drink on a desk, wouldn't prestidigitation take care of that I think? Okay now I'm imagining some very annoyed wizard having to find a big bag of rice to stick their most precious possession in, lol.

Pre-prepared is a normal mechanic in dnd. Wizards have can have a longer list of "known" spells but have to pick a shorter list of spells that they have "prepared" for the session to be able to cast at will.

BIIIIIG RESPECT for roleplaying the inscribing of wizard spells into a spellbook! I feel like this is a thing so often glossed over or handled by the player themselves in-between sessions and this little piece of Bone Cone made me realize: that's a damn shame! It feels like it can actually be really impactful to play out the act of wizards gaining new spells from transcribing them from somewhere else. As a DM, I have just never known how to implement this, or if it would even be fun. But this is pretty inspiring. I'll go submit a question to the fireside, asking Brennan to get nitty gritty with how he determined what spells, what level and how many could be sourced from the spellbooks. I NEEED to know the process!

I think they’ve said in fireside’s it’s all theater of the mind (though they did at least have a physical map of the shroud mountains at some point?) Agreed that I think Brennan does a good job of both enforcing rules and allowing the situation to breathe and not feel confined to those rules.

It just occurred to me that I don't know if the game is played entirely Theater of the Mind or if Brennan runs certain combats on physical tactics. I am such a fan of how this crew uses magic in slightly unintended ways, and stretches definitions a bit to go by the rule of cool or rule of vibes. I think the best example would be Ame's calm emotions in Abbasin, or just about anything in the first season's encounter with Niram and Orima. Magic just feels bigger and more cinematic when it's not super restrained by the rules of range or targeting capacity.

That's really interesting because Brennan set pre-preparedness at a lower DC than being able to copy the spells in 2 hours, which would only be rewarding if he expects a level up in the middle of some kind of encounter

I think it means that once she hits that level then she'll immediately be able to cast it. So even if she leveled up mid combat, she wouldn't have to wait till she's out of combat to stock that spell

Love that this opens up the possibility of leveling up mid session or Sky getting an item that allows for 4th level spell slots (maybe her citadel staff already does and she only needed to unlock her own understanding to access it which could interact interestingly, not that we know she's ever going to use it again at this point) to pop off the most classic wizard cannon in d&d. Not a guarantee, but it'd be pretty cool.
