WBN team, I have an idea. I absolutely love that you want the pace to be very particular and the show to be a certain way and it works for the show. As an avid fan of D&D podcasts (this one being my absolute favorite), I am used to every EP being 2-4 hours. I do love having a large amount of content to engage with. The explanation for show being edited down is super helpful timewise for what everything is being done, but I can't help but wonder what we are sometimes missing in the moments. I imagine it could be a lot of work, but could there ever be a b-side for just bits and wonderful moments that were lost for time, such as in the waiting periods for the next season? Just an idea for an extra filler "outtake" content. I feel it could go a long way for fans who worry they might be missing out! With love and respect, Alec

Having said that, I do think you've got an interesting point on Suvi's reckoning with specifically the *wildness* of spirits and where that intersects with nature within an animist setting. Considering the water murder choir parallel as a moment to recall the scale of devastation and question if the risk of a repeat occurrence with the dam (especially with the town below) is VERY juicy. And to you later point, while I do think there's interesting conflict between learned and instinctual responses in Suvi, I don't necessarily agree that her reactions to spirits (especially the ones that have actively harmed her friends or herself or openly desire to do so) is a part of that.

Yeah that's very fair - I think you're right that it's not about a rigid moral philosophy and that there's space for both in this character. I think her upbringing and Citadel's philosophy enshrines a value in the utilitarian nature of magic. At the end of the day it is a military institution that trains soldiers. And I think it's Suvi's own nature that balks against the structure of the Citadel wherein the conflict arises between her and herself, her and her family, her and her friends. I guess to your point, it's less about it being "calculated" and more her wrestling with what she learned previously

I appreciate your thoughts on Suvi's relationship with the Spirit, but I’d like to push back on framing her response as militaristic or utilitarian. Her reactions feel less like a calculated worldview and more like a deeply human response to the duality of harm and help. It's natural to appreciate something that aids you and to resent it when it causes you or your kin harm. Additionally, the relationships between Spirits and the Real—whether with wizards, witches, sorcerers, or even other spirits—are mostly transactional. No action within these dynamics is purely arbitrary or philanthropic. Everyone wants something. Suvi's evolving relationship with the Spirit reflects this complexity, not necessarily a rigid or utilitarian philosophy. I also feel there is a strong desire among some that Suvi will "wake up" to how evil her culture/government/faction is and join the "secret good guy rebels"

Hey! Thanks for the reply! My comparison was overly simplistic so apologies if you thought I was trying to talk shit about Suvi. I love this character and this world and I find her struggle to grapple with the "wildness" of the natural world around her to be one of the most grounding parts of her character. I guess after Taylor raised the musical parallel I was intrigued by the character parallels along those same story beats. But you rightly point out there's a lot more context to the situation (and a lot more has happened and been learned, by audience and character since then) Also "fundamental" was the wrong choice of word, I don't think it's something you based the character around. I suppose it was just an interesting relationship that had developed out of the story. Guess my fingers out paced my brain on that one! Apologies again! The idea that Suvi’s view of spirits is foundational to her character seems based not in engaging with her own *actual* philosophy and consequent actions regarding them, but instead forcing her narrative arc to be defined by the distance between herself and Eursulon/Ame. The implications therein are your own to unpack. In your comparison, Suvi’s *never* held the first opinion (her empathy is reserved specifically for the scores hurt/killed without Naram’s blood on their hands like the guards & soldiers drowned and strangled at the city gates). And “river spirit helps make a flood to block enemies from killing us as we flee” is a pretty regular opinion to hold. Suvi saying “you get what you get” (reminder: the end of that phrase is “and you don’t get upset”) as a “hey Umora is rough and spirits don’t get special treatment when they come here” one time in a heated moment in the first chapter is simply not an excuse to villainize or ignore every other spirit interaction she’s had. Y'all really heard her say "I don't hate them" and decided it was proof that she hates spirits so much, actually.

🫨 GOD this rules. i’ve consumed a lot of media in my time on this planet and i’ve come to the conclusion that Aabriya has created The Most deeply human and complex character in Suvi. ever since “they get what they get” i’ve been so invested in how that little seed of resentment will evolve, for better or for worse. i know Eursulon wasn’t present for that comment she made to Steel, though i’m curious to know whether he has picked up on her bias. i don’t know about anyone else, but i genuinely feel like Suvi’s attitude re: spirits has the very real possibility to unmake their true friendship.

I know we talk a lot about supporting Suvi's rights and more importantly Suvi's wrongs but I think one of the fundamental quandaries at the heart of this character is her relationship to the Spirit - and while we've seen her evolve (slightly) from "they get what they get" in Chapter 1, the comparison of "a trapped water spirit freeing itself and attacking my kin the wizards is bad" while "a water spirit releasing a torrent to destroy my enemies is good" is a very good illustration of the militaristic and utilitarian way which Suvi views the Spirit. I love the discussion of the respect of Battlemat Ruler & template style vs this more narrative form of combat. There is distinctly something satisfying from a technical proficiency level in trouncing an encounter with an indepth knowledge of a system, but that tends to move the stakes away from the narrative as time and energy is drilled into empirical definitions as opposed to emotional truths.

The idea of adina having to fall in love with her target to cast herself is so incredibly heartbreaking 💔 I love it SO much! Also kind of reminds me of a quote about women's most cruel fates in literature: “whenever an ideological judgement against a woman is so crushingly cruel that even the institutions of the society cannot bring themselves to pronounce it—for instance that a mother must give up her child, or that a wife must die to further her husband’s moral growth—in those cases it is the woman herself who is forced to pronounce and justify the sentence” -- the institution created her to destroy herself if the protection of another and forces her to proclaim her deadly fate as good and worthwhile because of the depth of her love. Might be reading top much into it, but I am just deeply fascinated by the tomori-lore 🥰

You know, what's always bugged me about the "trail of breadcrumbs" metaphor is that in Hansel and Gretel the breadcrumbs get eaten by birds and the kids get lost. Like, they are, in the story, specifically a bad way to leave a trail to follow.
