I feel like there js a reason that Suvi was kept away from Grandmother Wren after her Summer at the cottage. I know there were some issues with traveling doors during Suvi’s childhood, but surely steel and wren could have figured out how to get Ame and Suvi a playdate. It makes me wonder if Suvi’s memory was tampered with in childhood, and steel didn’t want her to see Wren because Wren may have figured it out.

Steel has been extremely careful in avoiding being caught in a lie without explicit, unimpeachable cover. She's done a damn near perfect job of covering up the truth. The only source of exceptions prior to this episode is Eiogharan - one she could not destroy. She has otherwise created a perfectly consistent story for Suvi and, frankly, listeners as well. I was not the first to observe it, but those nat 1s from Steel about memory modification seem like some of the most important rolls of the campaign thus far. They are hints to Suvi. There has been no attempt to share with Suvi the fact that her memory has been erased. If this were a one-time thing, it would have been easy to share that information. The fact that she didn't share it, as others have observed, raised the question: how many times has she done this gambit? How many times has she done it *with Suvi specifically*? Because it also seems as if she intends to do it again, this time with, likely, Ame and Eursulon as the memory targets. Knowing that Ame cannot be brought to the cause of the Citadel, and being certain that Eursulon cannot, they no longer have a use for Steel except to derail the career of the Wizard Sky, future leader of the Citadel.

I definitely he's a spirit of death primarily, since I'm pretty sure Brennan has said that at some point although I can totally see, regret or other things being part of his domain. Death fits really well with Lucio's Ferry as well because there's Charon and other famous death-related boatmen out there! Also, crossroads are often symbolic of the connection between our world and the afterlife, which is why in folklore people often meet devils or spirits there.

Brennan Lee Mulligan, Aabria Iyengar, I felt so seen by this episode. Suvi coming to terms with her magic felt so incredible. To have her approach magic with understanding, and learning the mechanisms behind it, and to have that be okay and good and right was so powerful for me. Growing up autistic, I often felt that there was some sort of shared weave of magic that connected people, and that I could not see or access at all. But with analysis, with time, and with help, I started to figure out how it works. To reach out with an intuition born of systems and understanding, to take part in this shared connection. To hear Aabria say "My friends are magic, and so am I." And to finally have wizardry, a way of approaching magic in an logical systematic way of words and mechanics be treated as just as magical and wonderous as the path of witchcraft and the world of spirits was heartwarming and beautiful to hear. At the very end, it was so heartwarming and refreshing to hear when the spirit Vandal showed Suvi the first curse word, and how the first act of wizardry was a word that lessened the pain, and how wizardry has been a thing with humanity since ancient times. Thanks so much to the cast and crew of Worlds Beyond Number. Thank you all so much.

I think that is part of why the Witches civil strife made things worse. Some of the other stations were very much more pro social (I think one was literally hearth and home, or something), and their absence made everyone on both sides go into a negative feedback loop. Which is why, I think, Wren tried to sort of pause the Man In Black: she couldn't reverse the damage or the plots, but she could stall them getting worse until the current generation had enough of an "all sides" perspective to try and lower the tempature a little.

spoilers for the ending . . . . . . . . thinking about the advice steel gives suvi not to do any networking at the same time as thinking about her friend hana's father being kidnapped and her boyfriend's unseen character arc is devastating whatever silver was thinking (whether killing silence was to avenge the great bullfrog for suvi, or to incriminate suvi with the letter to him on his person) we'll never know because he was silo'd off from suvi, first by his job (though he may have been radicalised by steel's genocide of house raumza at the battle of twelve brookes), and second by steel's plans to banish him into obscurity. obsessed with the directions this story could take based on what the wizards make of silence's assassination. but my main point is that steel's advice for suvi to isolate herself means that she might never have known about golt's kidnapping if not for her True Friends. taking advantage of suvi's absence from the citadel, the absolute control that steel wants over suvi's life in the name of security is devastating (and great) storytelling

So so good. There is no way I am gonna sleep now. Suvi’s magic soars to new heights (L5) Eursolon recognizing the Man in Blacks true hatred and Ame finding Gultch. The ink demon delivering the letters, now understanding Suvi’s journey to 12 Brooks. My heart filled with sadness as Silver lay dead after his attack on Silent. I will have to go back and verify, but I’m pretty certain the message from Suvi prompted his intentions. There is no way I’m gonna sleep tonight. I have too many unanswered questions.

Y’all I’m about to write an entire thesis about how WBN showcases System Justification Theory so incredibly well Spoilers: Silver for sure had the Gaeus cast on him by Steel (or by the order of steel) because plot twist she’s for sure the big bad of the citadel (maybe this seems a bit much and hopefully stays as a theory bc it would break Suvi, but I’m almost certain the book 2 or 3 twist is going to be that Suvi finds out Steel killed Soft and Stone because she found out they were planning to turn fully against the citadel and revealed their treason and in the process got them killed, all the while convincing herself that the means would justify the ends and that it would be worth it for the power she could wield and change she could make once in power— while sinking further into the system the entire time and continuing to justify worse and worse actions) Also 12/10 would recommend Jost’s Theory of System Justification bc it’s hella relevant to both this show and the American political climate

Silver did what he had been told and trained all his life that good loyal Citadel wizard does. I'm unhappy that he wasn't convinced to change his worldview, but I understand why he continued to follow the dictates of the Citadel Justification Machine. Steel is the one who decided to punish Silver because he followed protocol, so that Steel could protect Suvi, and that makes Steel a villain. Along with all the other things that make Steel a villain of course.

Very interesting with The Man In Black. So he is a Psychopomp and a spirit of the world of men. Very Hermes like, and I wonder if it is the boundary stone and road/traveler at once thing that drives him. Curran is being treated so poorly as a show to motivate Eursulon to go back permanently, I think. The Man in Black may also literally be (or at least control) the wayshadow that makes normal communication between the real and the spirit so difficult. Unless it is the sort of short visits for spirits, and leaving in death for mortals. A ferryman defending his right for pennies, it seems.

Silver was promoted, not demoted. I think it’s possible that Steel, rattled by realizing Suvi knows her memory was tampered with, sent Slate to “handle” Silver’s loose lips. There was an argument and Slate magically compelled Silver since Silver wouldn’t come to heel. Easiest way to remove an issue is to make a person “dangerous.” My concern is with the fact it was Suvi’s mentor and Silver has Suvi’s letter on him. Depending on what the letter said, it’d either look like a scorned ex trying to tear down everything Suvi built or cared about or Silver acting to impress/“help” Suvi and win her back. Either way, I think Scorn is in danger.
