Chapter 25: Forced Synergy

The stench of salt, rusted metal, and stagnant water filled his nostrils, a perfume of despair. Around him, a circle of nightmares emerged from the murky water. A group of villains with shark-like features, amphibious skin, and slimy tentacles surrounded them, their eyes gleaming with predatory intelligence in the gloom.
But the cold of the water was nothing compared to the ice he felt in his chest as he looked at Momo.
He held her with one arm, keeping her afloat, but her body was a dead weight. She was trembling violently, her lips blue, her breathing so shallow it barely fogged the air.
"Midoriya-san…" she murmured, her voice a thread of air, her teeth chattering. "I can't… I can't feel my fingers… My body won't respond…"
"It's okay, Yaoyorozu, I've got you," he said, his own voice trembling from the cold and adrenaline.
"The shield…" she continued, her eyes glassy and unfocused. "It consumed too much energy… too many lipids… I have nothing… left…"
She was out of commission. A liability. And they were the target.
One of the villains, a man with the head and teeth of a hammerhead shark, laughed, a wet, guttural sound. "Well, well. Two little wet birds. Which one of you should we taste first?"
Without another warning, he lunged at them, his clawed hands slicing through the water. Izuku, with a cry of warning, pushed Momo aside with all his strength. The villain's claws, which had been aimed at her neck, met Izuku's arm instead. He felt a sharp, burning pain as the claws tore through the fabric of his suit and his skin. Blood bloomed, staining the water around him an ephemeral crimson.
The villains paused, sniffing the blood in the water like true sharks. They were regrouping. Preparing for a final, coordinated attack.
Izuku looked at Momo, who was now staring at him with wide, terrified eyes. Then he looked at the tightening circle of monsters.
There's no way out, he thought, his mind racing, entering a state of cold, calculating panic. No escape. I can't fight all of them and protect her at the same time. It's impossible. She's our only weapon, our only hope of getting out of here… and she's offline. She's empty.
His mind flashed back to his discoveries, to his twisted "science."
My Quirk… the manual… the efficiency of contact… Contact with Ochako through the suit worked, but it was slow. The accidental skin-to-skin contact with Yaoyorozu… it gave me the clearest, purest data. What if it wasn't accidental? What if the contact was total? Deliberate? Directly at the source of her power, at her energy reserves?
The idea was monstrous. It was a violation. It was unthinkable.
He looked at Momo's pale, trembling face, her blue lips, the desperation in her eyes. Then he looked at the villains, who were beginning to move again, their smiles filled with a promise of pain.
The decision was made in a frozen instant. Necessity overcame propriety. Survival crushed morality.
I'm sorry, Yaoyorozu, he thought, his expression hardening, his boyish features replaced by a steely determination. I'll apologize a thousand times for this. I'll take every slap you want to give me. I'll let you build a cage around me and throw away the key. But first, we have to get out of here alive.
He didn't hesitate. Hesitation was a luxury the dead couldn't afford.
He grabbed Momo by the shoulders, his grip firm, shaking her from her hypothermic stupor. He turned her in the water to face him directly. Her gray eyes, once bright and analytical, were now dull and frightened.
"Yaoyorozu, look at me," he commanded, his voice a bastion of authority in the midst of the chaos. "I need you to trust me. More than you've ever trusted anyone. This is for survival. Close your eyes if you want, but don't fight it."
Before she could process his words, before she could protest or even form a question, he kissed her.
It wasn't a tender kiss. It wasn't romantic. It was an act of tactical desperation. His lips met hers, cold from the water, and he kissed her with a fierce urgency, a deep kiss designed to short-circuit her panic, to force her mind to focus on a single, overwhelming new sensation.
And while their lips were joined, his right hand moved with cold, decisive resolution.
His hand slid under the water, finding the deep V-neck of her hero costume. The slick, elastic fabric parted easily. His cold fingers touched the even colder skin of her chest. There was no fabric. No impediment. It was direct contact. His palm covered her left breast, feeling the faint beat of her heart beneath.
And then, he executed the final step. The "input" his Quirk craved.
His thumb moved with a deliberate, almost clinical smoothness, and slowly caressed the sensitive tip. He used his nail to very lightly scratch the tender pink nub. He felt how, even through the cold, the nipple reacted instantly, hardening under his touch. It was the point of maximum conductivity. The catalyst.
Momo's reaction was instantaneous and violent.
A choked gasp escaped her throat, vibrating through her lips and mingling with Izuku's kiss. It was a completely involuntary reaction, a sensory overload. And as her body reacted to the unexpected touch, something deeper reacted to his Quirk.
A wave of pure heat, like molten metal, was born in the center of her chest, right under Izuku's hand. The heat exploded through her body, erasing the water's chill, the exhaustion, the fear. It was an overwhelming sensation, a mixture of impossible pleasure and raw power flooding her system. Her eyes, which she had instinctively closed, snapped open. They were no longer glassy or afraid. They shone with an inner light, a renewed intelligence and power. She responded to the kiss with a sudden force, an urgency that matched his own.
Izuku broke the kiss. They were both panting, their breaths creating clouds of vapor in the air. He pulled his hand away, the feeling of her skin still burning on his fingers.
They looked at each other in the middle of the icy water. Momo's face was flushed, a deep blush that had nothing to do with the cold. But her posture had changed. She was no longer sinking. She held herself upright in the water, her body vibrating with a contained energy that seemed to make the very air crackle.
"Midoriya… Izuku…" she said, her voice shaky but firm, using his first name for the first time. "What was… what did you do to me?"
Izuku looked at her, his own face pale with adrenaline, but a wild, triumphant smile spread across his lips.
"I gave you a push," he answered, his voice a hoarse gasp. "Now, return the favor. Let's finish them!"
Momo didn't answer with words. She answered with action.
She slapped the surface of the water with both palms. There was no splash, but a dull thud, like a hydraulic piston. Instantly, a circular platform of a dark, lightweight but incredibly strong metallic material erupted from beneath them, lifting them out of the water. It was a complex creation, with an engraved non-slip surface and raised edges. She had created it in less than a second.
The villains shouted in surprise, recoiling from the sudden appearance of the platform.
"Get up there! Try to climb up!" the shark villain growled.
Several of them began to scramble up the sides. Momo looked at Izuku, whose fists were clenched, ready for a fight he knew he couldn't win.
"You won't fight empty-handed!" she declared.
The skin on her forearm glowed, and from it she created not a simple staff, but a perfectly balanced short combat spear and a light, round shield, the kind used by Greek hoplites.
"Protect us!" she ordered.
Izuku took them, his hands moving with the muscle memory of his training. The weight felt good. It felt right. He was no longer a helpless boy. He was an armed combatant.
The horde of villains attacked the platform from all sides. Momo became a whirlwind of creation. She stood in the center, her body no longer trembling from cold, but vibrating with power.
"This ends now!" she said, her voice filled with an authority Izuku had never heard from her.
With her right hand, she created and threw a barrage of heavy, sticky capture nets that ensnared three of the smaller villains, immobilizing and sinking them. Simultaneously, with her left hand, she materialized a dozen sharp, non-lethal projectiles made of a hard polymer and fired them with incredible precision to drive back another group. All while maintaining perfect balance and analyzing the battlefield like a supercomputer.
Izuku became her guardian. He used the shield to deflect claws and jets of water, and the spear to repel those who managed to climb up, protecting her back while she worked.
"Yaoyorozu, the one with the tentacle on my right!" Izuku shouted, blocking a fish-man with his shield. "I need something sharp to cut!"
Momo, without even looking at him, answered his request. A short, curved blade sprouted from her wrist, and she tossed it over her shoulder. Izuku caught it in mid-air and, with a swift motion, sliced through the tentacles trying to grab his ankle.
A larger villain, with skin as tough and gray as rock, managed to get on the platform, ignoring the projectiles. He lunged at Momo.
She smiled. "Miscalculation," she said coldly. She placed a hand on the surface of the platform at her feet. "Midoriya, three more coming up from the stern! Cover me! I need two seconds!"
"Got it!" he yelled, placing himself between her and the new attackers, using his shield to block their desperate blows.
Thick, gnarled vines of an incredibly dense, dark wood erupted from the platform. They coiled around the rock-skinned villain with the speed of a snake, tightening, until he was completely immobilized in an organic cage.
It was the first time she had created complex organic matter. And she had done it effortlessly.
The battle ended as quickly as it had begun. The remaining villains, seeing their comrades defeated, hesitated. And that hesitation was all Momo needed. With a final barrage of projectiles and nets, she neutralized the rest.
Silence returned to the Shipwreck Zone, broken only by their ragged breaths and the gentle lapping of water against their platform. They stood back-to-back in the center of their creation, surrounded by defeated villains. Steam rose from Momo's body from the massive energy use. She was panting, but she stood tall, powerful.
Slowly, she looked down at her own hands, as if seeing them for the first time. Then she looked at Izuku, her face a complex mixture of confusion, gratitude, a deep blush, and stupor.
"I've never…" she said, her voice trembling, but not from weakness. "I've never felt like this. So… powerful. So… alive."
Izuku, leaning on his spear, his arm still bleeding, gave her a tired but triumphant smile.
"Welcome to the team, Yaoyorozu."
