i think what’s most fascinating for me is the idea that the man in the moon created pitch black for a purpose to serve humankind in some way. that perhaps when pitch was more powerful in the dark ages it was because people needed that primal fear of the dark to help them stay alive. however when they evolved more and became more industrious they no longer needed that fear to drive them and so the man in the moon created the guardians to guide humanity with what would help them to live and thrive things that each guardian represents: dreams, wonder, change/ rebirth, memory, and fun

To answer your question Danny, yes, a lot of European countries do have a version of the tooth fairy that’s instead a little mouse! Can’t speak for the other countries but i know in Spain and Latin America our version is called “el Raton/Ratoncito Perez” (literally just Perez the mouse/little mouse) I guess the tiny hummingbird fairy took their job very seriously

my favorite subgenre of fanfic for this movie is interpretations where jack is also the guardian of kids dying from neglect/the cold/hunger. so he is called to children who are actively dying and comforts them as they drift away. its a very dark but well written subsection of the fandom. i think if you search up 'jack frost saint of su*cide" those types of fic will pop up, warning for the obvious triggers that come with such dark topics tho

I loved seeing you react to this, it’s one of my comfort movies and I hyperfixated hard on it when I was younger! I definitely recommend checking out the art book (the concept art is beautiful and they talk about how they gave the character models veins which is still crazy to me) and the book series. The book series is different but still a very entertaining and fun read that has similar tones to the film. You also get Pitch’s backstory which is incredibly dark, and the illustrations throughout are beautiful!

So, fun fact, the Tooth Fairy doesn't actually have any lore. The earliest mention of it, was in the mid 1900s. A woman posted in the local newspaper that to help her child deal with loose teeth, she told him "Every tooth you lose, you get $ for it! my favourite movie!!!!! regarding jack frost's backstory: i would totally hate the Human reveal if not for that scene showing how he died. it is a really good portrayal of just why he was chosen - and i just love the dark thought of a teenage Jack knowing full well that he and his sister could fall and die at any moment, and still trying his best to make her laugh so she doesn't panic, and buy himself enough time to save her before the ice fell. and YES - pitch/jack is a big ship in this fandom, as well as the people who love tsundere type characters who want jack/bunny. that said it is a fun thought to recontextualise the Guardians as a poly relationship, hence why 'selecting a new Guardian' is so dramatic for them because they are introducing a new partner and not just a colleague. but yeah in general, this movie is great!!!! so fun on rewatches too as you pick up on new details and come up with new headcanons for character backstories or mindsets. it's definitely worth reading a summary of the lore backstory though as this movie is based on a book which explains the origin story and also has space aliens kind of?? and shows just how the pitch/man in the moon feud came about. extremely funky

the book series is nothingggg like the movie, but it is really good. it's like the stories of each guardian before they became what they are now, it also gives more lore on the man in the moon and his story. the book series and the movie are basically two different universes because of how different they are and the character designs and such. you can also find like concept arts for the movie, there was supposed to be a scene where they're in space with a giant ship, but obviously where would they put that? But the book series is called 'The Guardians of Childhood' if you were to ever look for it.

I watch this movie every year since it was released, it’s always a joy. Thank you for the reaction video! As for the lore, it has alien armies, mind control/corruption and imperial magic apparently. The movie reimagined stuff (brilliantly), but the lore is wild to begin with. Also, yeah, Pitch and Jack are a good ship. Jack and Easter Bunny had good chemistry, too (and actually interacted over the years). Tooth fairy was just swooning, I think, and Jack went with it - he kinda rolls with the craziness as a rule. 😅

On an aside, I'm pretty convinced most of your fans are tumblr users at this point 😂 this was an extremely popular movie on there, along with HTTYD, Tangled and Brave. It was a whole era at one point. If I recall, it came into popularity just as SPN, Doctor Who, and Sherlock were losing steam. As for the animation. The creator, William Joyce, has a very distinct art style that was integrated into it - you might also know him from the kids show Rolie Polie Olie. And, surprisingly, one of the biggest ships during the peak of this movie was Jack/Bunny 😂 though Jack/Pitch was definitely up there along with Sandy/Pitch and a few others. If I recall, this was during the height or the tail end of the shipping wars era as well.

Interesting note about the Rise of the Guardians. The author of the book series was in the progress of writing those books when he pitched the idea for the movie. They are separate stories and the characters have different stories as well. The books are absolutely 100% way wilder and convoluted. The movie was based on his rough drafts and, most importantly, his concept art. The book series is an illustrated children’s book, hence the subject matter. Except that the books are WAY darker.

I own the whole book series (including the picture books) I would 1000% recommend them, they're wonderfully dark and the lore you didn't understand in the movie is fully explained there as well. They're also very easy reads. There are minor differences with certain characters, like Bunny, and one major difference with Jack's backstory that is more in line with what you originally wanted for him, but I feel like you can understand the evolution they took in the movie. Just make sure you read The Man in the Moon and Sandman first, and Jack Frost last (yes, you need to get the picture books too) the others are all numbered.

I'm so glad you watched this! It's one of my top 10 "Hidden Gem" movies. The movie is very, very, very, loosely based on a children's book series which is where the whole bird-woman toothfairy comes in, but it's like saying "flowers are based off water" (no shade to either side, they are just very different). In the books I actually really like the toothfairy's backstory, she gives more wonder woman or xena warrior princess vibes, but I agree the whole Tooth and Jack relationship is kinda weird and shoved in (Or at least heavily one sided on Tooth's part). When I first got into ROTG I was a big JackRabbit shipper (mostly because I have a weakness for enemies to lovers and I found Pitch a bit too manipulative for my tastes).

I did actually lightly google about tooth fairy origins earlier and I couldn't find anything about birds but I did see that the idea of a creature trading your teeth for coins was actually originally most popularly depicted as a mouse. And then I only recently thought to google what he is as an adult when i remembered this movie. Idk if this is a /me/ thing or bc I grew up in Germany and he's just not as much of a thing here (I FEEL like it's the latter) but Jack Frost seems way less universal to me than the sandman.

As someone who was on Pinterest at a time where clicking on one single post of fan art made the whole feed all about that fandom, I can assure you that Jack was shipped with EVERY CHARACTER BUT JAMIE. Jack was shipped with characters that didn't even exist in his movie. Jack was Mulitversed into ships with characters that weren't even age appropriate for him given Hiccup and Merida are still minors in their movies, and into love triangles between Rapunzel and Elsa who are theorized to be cousins, mind you 💀💀 Jack's been through it.

Just so you know. The series of books this is based on "The Guardians of Childhood" are also really good! They give the back story of each of the characters, and there are some pretty dark, heavy elements. Pitch's book is my favorite and his back story is really complex and tragic.

This is my favorite movie. I don’t know about the books made for the older kids, but the actual children’s books with gorgeous illustrations are so good. And so sad, too. The story of the Man in the Moon in particular makes me honestly teary. They changed a few things from the books in the movie, but I think they kept the spirit well. Jack Frost’s character was made for the movie, so they added him to the books, but with a different backstory. Also, there are aliens in this universe.

So the book series it's based on is pretty cool, it is a prequel though, so it has all the rest of the guardians backstories and Jack actually doesn't even exist yet. Even Pitch has a backstory that honestly I love so freaking much. I also guarantee that you would like book Tooth waaaaaay better. I definitely do. She's a badass. I would say before reading the books, remember that the movie is yes based on them but not everything is the same obviously. There are additions and things taken away but both have the same heart I feel like. Like I said it's the prequel, so basically it's about the first time this all happened, pitch trying to take over the world. I will also say there's a character similar to Jack that we all love as well and I bet you'll like him too. Tldr its a good series and I highly suggest it.

I love this movie, so I’m glad you enjoyed it too. I watched it as a kid and it touched me deeply, but even as an adult I think it’s a good movie. It has something special about it, in the writing, something… very genuine, I think. The dialogue and the characters feel very real despite the fantastical setting. Its a real thing with a million different AU to get them all in the same room together. Spirits, time travelers, modern day kids, students at Hogwarts. The girls from Frozen got added after that came out.
