Ariel
🕑 Added 2020-05-11 20:43:17 +0000 UTCHey everyone, the first image of May is finished, Ariel!
I wanted to do a more mature/realistic version of her and I have to say I had a lot of fun doing it. I never really had to paint water like that, had no idea how to do it, but hey, it's always cool to learn that stone brushes can create water ripples!
And I never painted hair partially underwater so .. can check that off the bucket list lol
Also, her necklace is totally based on Moana's, I really liked how it looks elegant yet "crudely done".
Anyway, lot of fun parts to do on this image, so I hope you guys like the end result!
Ps. There's a "legs version" for the nsfw, don't worry ;)

thank you! I'm glad you liked it! Hope your expectations for Ariel were met =D
Kry this is a masterpiece! This is by far the most beautiful artwork you ever made, the wait for MerMay was so worth it :)

So many interesting facts: stone brushes, Moana's necklace) I really like this mature version of Ariel!

thanks! I really love that greenish / blue color for water. It makes it so "paradise" like =D

Wow, this is amazing.

That ocean water looks so pretty I wanna drink it! LOL. The colors in this piece are insanely well done and blend beautifully with each other. Especially love how tail in the water looks.
SnakeEyes
This is soooo beautiful!

Just to be clear, the nsfw versions are either tail + topless or full nude (with legs). =D
Zuraha
I cant wait for the tail NSFW
Lee
thank you! I thought it would be an interesting pose, since floating in the water usually is a very relaxed moment =D
Lee
thank you!

I love the feeling and atmosphere here ๐so peaceful and the way she's half in half out of the water looks so cool. The detail on her accessories looks amazing and that tail too ๐ฒreally incredible work ๐๐๐
Will
I'd say she turned out really well

To be fair, the legged version has a lot of charm. I think woman swimming naked can be something really sexy and natural. So it was definitely great to be able to do it as well =D . And it was also the base "structure" to build a tail, so I'd get the idea of the length and stuff like that to make sure the tail didn't twist and curl too close to the torso.

Thank you! There were quite a few challanges on this image. While I loved the initial concept, I had no idea how to paint hair partially underwater, but thankfully I found a very high quality portrait of a model in a similar head pose, so it was a really good source of inspiration and reference. The body itself was fairly easy to do, but making sure it all worked together (body, fin, water going around etc) was interesting to do lol Fun fact, the flower was initially going to be bright pink, but I totally forgot to color it when I finished the image. So I went back to add color and it was a bit "lost" in her red hair so I just kept the white version. One of those happy accidents. Speaking of happy accidents, the water ripples and texture were made with a stone texture brush that I adapted a little. I was trying out a few different brushes and it was one of those "hmmm .. I wonder if I can do this ... " and it worked lol . And I have to say I'm particularly proud of her face/hair section. It was one of those images that were instantly on my top 10 of all time when I finished it =)

She's beautiful (and the background is great too). And while I'm sure I'll appreciate and enjoy her leggy, human version, I wanted to say that I don't think such a thing was necessary. The mermaid version clearly could be not safe for work (or even more not safe for work; even this "safe" version might be too sexy to post at work ๐).
Lee
thanks! I really liked the idea =D
Lee
thank you! =)

yeah, to be fair that's something really tricky to do. Filming underwater is not really practical, and special effects might look off. But who knows!
Lee
thank you!!

That's amazing!

Great work! You know I get the feeling that the live-action remake is going to look pretty bland and not really capture the feeling of being underwater.

Oh wow. That's just beautiful!

Oh these colours are exactly what I was hoping for! The blue-green water with an overall gradient of tone from light to dark looks so beautiful, while the warm skin and hair of Ariel is so very striking and a fantastic contrast. I love the background itself with the textures of the water and mossy rocks beneath it, as well as the white foam showing the waves in the surface. Ariel herself is absolutely spectacular! You did a great job with her tail, the shining texture of the scales and the insane level of detail to each and every one is so impressive, I also love her fins too with the transition from dark tonight blue, as well as the rippling ridges through them. Her hair looks gorgeous as it floats and drifts in the water, as always given such incredible detail with so many strands splitting off. And having the hair partially submerged was a great idea too. I also really like the white flower which itself pops nicely against the rich reds. Her face looks gorgeous and those bright crystal blue eyes are so captivating ๐๐. All of her skin is a gorgeously warm tone that is so striking against the water, while the wet texture to it is marvellous. You did a great job with the anatomy and as always, I adore how you paint raised shoulders with the overlapping shapes and how they connect to the biceps and chest, the neck too has so much going on and I really like the area of her ribs too. Her necklace and seashell bra also add a nice splash of cool colour against her skin and I love the shiny textures that both have. The extra shells and shapes that connect each section of the bra with their own textures and fully rendered shapes and cast shadow are a wonderful extra detail too! Brilliant work on Ariel! The colours, details and rendering are sublime and so vibrant ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ And knowing that you're doing a legged version is the icing on the cake! Even more warm skin tones against the water will look lovely ๐
