When you rewatch, make sure to pay attention to every word of Jane's letter. It will give you a little incite into his character. Please consider adding Pluribus, the new Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad's fame, to your poll! I'm sure that there are a lot of older shows that you want to get to, but I'd love to see you react to this one as it happens so you have the best chance of avoiding spoilers.

You'll notice on rewatches of 1x01 that Bendis gets riddled with bullets. He was obviously not pretty enough to survive. He was indeed not Tracy.

I think Joss's talent for creating memorable characters with such seeming ease is what also allows him to kill them off so ruthlessly. Other writers, if they create someone compelling, would never want to kill them off, but Whedon will do it without compunction if it makes for a better story, secure in his confidence that he can always come up with someone else just as interesting. "If you can't run, crawl. And if you can't crawl. you get someone to carry you." If the show needs a philosophy, or a mission statement, that will do for one.

I think this is the only time that I'm gonna say it, but Zoe was wrong in the flashback. That's not the first rule of combat. The first rule of combat is: be somewhere else when the combat starts.

This was actually the final episode filmed for the series, and it was during the filming of the funeral sequence at the end that the cast and crew were informed that the show had been cancelled, so the sombre mood and sadness on their faces is very real. The composer also had this in mind when writing the music for that scene. As many mistakes as Tracey made, I always feel so bad for him at the end, not to mention Zoe and Mal for having to kill him. As Dan said in his comment, you might recognise Tracey's actor from both Buffy and Angel. You know it's a Whedon show when they recycle actors lol

Tracey hasn't appeared previously in Firefly, but the actor is in both Buffy and Angel - in the Buffy season 7 episode Conversations With Dead People he's the vampire Buffy has her little therapy session with, and he plays Fred's lab assistant Knox in Angel.
