Month of May - Announcements!
🕑 Added 2019-05-04 01:06:07 +0000 UTCIt's been a while since I've kept in touch here, and there are a few things to cover as just a general "touching base" (whatever that means).
- "Switches" will be updated on the 5th of the month as usual, for the $6+ comic tiers. The entire comic will be completed during May as it only has a few more pages to go after this update. And the very end will see the debut of Charles' sister Claire.
- Production is pretty much back on regular schedule, so expect to see more single pieces, more comics, the resuming of the Brooke Goes To College story, along with the occasional YCH and such.
- Once "Switches" is done, I'm very probably going to devise an internet artist name. It's probably not that big a deal, and it hasn't been, but I started drawing stuff way back before the internet was huge, and every artist I was initially exposed to was using their real name. So, that's what I did. I know it may not change things colloquially, but I at least want to change things and come up with an internet artist name which isn't my real name. This means changing the name here, and on DA, and such, and it'll probably change the URL to my Patreon. I'll have to reflect that on the signature of all future pieces, and it may necessitate the updating of bookmarks.
However, I will need to devise an internet name. And if you have any suggestions, feel free to share them in the comments below.
When I initiate this change I'll probably let you know about a dozen times so you won't be caught off guard.
Thank you all for being patient while I've been moving over the course of weeks, and then working to try to catch back up by prioritizing my comic projects!

When talking about your art to friends, I always call you Naylor. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with using your real name as an artist name.

How about just modifying your current name a little to achieve the same affect without the disadvantages. “Jaylor” maybe?

At this point after decades, might be a bit late to change things up now. Especially given your name is already established in the genre of work you do. Changing it now might actually hurt your exposure to new viewers. Or at the very least confuse the heck out of the old guard fans.

So, what is the reason for suddenly interest in wanting a internet artist name, if we may ask? Hopefully it's nothing to sinister. I would have to agree with others that it would be a shame to lose that name branding, however, I do also understand the desire for privacy in your daily life if that is what your going for. I, for one, would miss seeing your name on your art though.

All of these points are spot on, a minimum of research would lead me to the original artist. Then again I've been connecting dots in this genre for years, its not so hard when you know where to look. Finally.. If you're worried about google leading your less informed family members to your source of income.. Umm.. I suspect awkward conversations are inevitable.. Google does not forget well. In that case, perhaps the brand is bittersweet.

For real, that's why I asked about IRL stuff. Hell I picked this particular pseudonym and only use it for Patreon. I would want to say that the cat's out of the bag already. Jay's used his real name for 10(ish) years, and some random person posting art that looks suspiciously like Jay's wouldn't hold up to any kind of scrutiny. From a business perspective it's a potentially catastrophically bad decision. From a personal security / privacy one, it could (maybe) deter only the absolute morons. That's up to Jay to weigh though.

Hmm.. I too have always sorta considered Fisk as your 'fursona' but there really hasn't been any particular reasoning behind that other than a mere assumption or feeling. Would it be a useful exercise to create a character drawing that you feel represents your artist persona and then use that for crowd sourcing ideas?

I agree with these points. But at the same time, I’m not brave enough to be on the internet under my real name, so I can understand the issue. It’s going to be messy. There’s something like 10 years of art surrounding the name, then the trail will go cold for anyone that isn’t explicitly told that A = B now...

Hey Jay, I would say that changing to a new internet handle would probably be a bad move. You've built your following, brand and style under the "Jay Naylor" umbrella and changing it would be akin to when Prince changed his "name" to that symbol. People looking for your work in the future might not be able to find you, and likely people will still keep calling your work "art by Jay Naylor" or calling you Jay. Additionally any changing of a patreon like that would likely mean that everyone would need to re-pledge. Same thing for changing of bookmarks or other things. I don't know how big a hit it would be, but I've seen similar things happen when artists change their names and it cost them at least 1/2 of their fanbase. Is there something that I'm missing with your current handle? You're the only Jay Naylor I know of, is there an issue with people trying to do IRL stuff to you? I'd love your thoughts man. Just trying to look out for you.

I'm already trying not to be confused for one of my characters, or to have people mistake one of my characters as representing me somehow. Fisk was a generic-ish persona name a long time ago, but now he's his own character and not me.
