Work and Computer Update
🕑 Added 2018-10-29 00:17:26 +0000 UTC I have the new system up and running and fully capable of work, and I knocked out a bit of it today, to make up for what I intended to do yesterday.The files to make up the end of "Offline" and the first page of "Normal Perverts" are compressed, and on better, higher resolution monitors, you will notice the difference. But it's all I can do for now without completely re-doing those three pages, which is roughly a week of work without getting much else done. If I can eventually recover data from my prior computer, I will update the comics with the higher quality .jpgs.
I ordered the extra special screwdriver set required to open up my old laptop (because of course you need them, how can it be any other way?). I'm going to open it and survey and see what I can do with the HD inside. However, looking up the model, it's one of those where Apple decided to solder the titty-fucking SSD to the board. So even if I can get to it, I'm not sure I can get anything off of it, even with something that can read from a PCIe SSD. The old laptop is just refusing to turn on, all together, so any option that requires power to the old computer isn't possible.
Nonetheless, work proceeds.

Might wanna give the Louis Rossman a try. He runs a computer repair shop in New York and has an ongoing feud with Apple. If anybody has a chance of recovering your data it's him. His YouTube channel has a bunch of videos detailing repairs as well

Huh... Guess I am a little outdated then... Sorry I couldn’t help. I would still give it a week to dry out over a heat vent or something (hell, even a giant bag of rice). I have had a couple them at went swimming or run over and survived, you might just need to give it time.

I did try that a couple of days ago, and again just now. And they don't use magsafe plugs anymore. It's all thunderbolt.

Have you tried resetting the SMC after a few days of dry time? Apples have built in breakers that are supposed to help prevent a total loss due to a short. The HDD should be fine even with the water damage, but it may need some TLC from you to get it to boot. To reset the SMC press the SHIFT, CTRL, OPTION, and Power button at the same time with the unit plugged in. If you did it correctly your MagSafe plug should shift colour, indicating a reset, then return to normal (green to amber to green).

The mounting of more components on the motherboard of laptops is to decrease manufacturing costs, at the expense of repairability. Now days things aren't really made to be repaired, but rather replaced. Good that you had everything backed up, it just goes to show. A good data recovery service may be able to get what's on the drive, if the drive is still functional. I'm sending happy thoughts your way.

Depending on the model of your Mac you may need a special enclosure even if the SSD is detachable. The 2015 MBP f.ex. The pinout on the SSD is Apple-specific. OWC has a specific enclosure for that. A few minutes of googling should point you in the right direction.

LOL I came here to recommend the same thing to Jay after getting the E-mail, as far as the special connector goes that's true as long as you have an older macbook. Apple removed the port for emergency data retrieval in later models.

Seconded. Louis is a really great individual and will do you as solid as he can. There's a chance he can save the whole machine, leaving you with two. Having a spare machine is handy sometimes. If not, then there is actually a special connector to get at the data on the SSD (Really, Apple? Why the fuck are you being so retarded?), so getting the data back isn't without all hope.

That’s fair. It would be around $400 to fix your machine (they do flat rate board repair); and I absolutely understand that concern. Though from what I’ve seen in their live-streams, Louis and his team just fix and clean the boards, make sure the machine can power on and get to either a login screen or the desktop, then shut it down and ship it out. I wouldn’t worry about them digging through your files at all.

I didn't lose much ultimately, and at this point I'm not sure if it's worth the expense and rigamarole of dealing with technicians I hope don't have an issue with what I do for a living.

I’d recommend hitting up the Rossmann Repair Group in NYC. They focus nearly, if not completely exclusively on Apple hardware, and might be able to help you out. Odds are you only shorted out a couple things that they’ll be able to replace and get your machine running again. They’ve got a YouTube channel if you’d like to check them out first. I am not affiliated with the Rossmann group in any way. I’ve just had hardware fixed by them in the past.
