Looking back at it, I think using a multiply layer for the shading values might be the easiest way to get across shadow shapes in the fewest brush strokes, however this will sacrifice the colors.
Qualities of multiply:
+ Better shapes
+ Fewer brushstrokes
- Worse colors
-- Learn less about brush placement
