She’d graduated from college last week, had hugged her parents, had dinner and then waved goodbye. They’d died in a car accident driving home. This house was home, sure, but it was going to be so empty without them.
Taking her key, Jamie unlocked the front door and walked into what, in mind, was still her parents’ home. The only sound inside was the grandfather clock. She set her duffle bag on the couch and looked around. It had been almost six years since she’d been home for more than an afternoon. At twenty-five, her master’s degree freshly minted, she’d planned to go into library sciences. She’d already had a call from the local library offering her a spot this fall.
Taking a deep breath, she recounted the meeting with the lawyers for her parents’ estate. The house and everything in it, along with her parents’ savings, were hers, but the lawyers had suggested that she consider liquidating the house if she planned to go after her doctorate. Jamie still wasn’t sure.
Making her way through the house, she brushed her long brown hair back from her face and paused at the door to her room. Her parents had left it just as it had been when she was eighteen, though it felt like a lifetime ago. Her silver and black stuffed tiger was still laying on her bed where she’d left it. Jamie peered around. “Hello, is someone there?”
“Down here, you daft twit,” the voice replied. Staring down at the tiger, Jamie’s eyes widened as she saw the stuffed toy blink. She screamed and tossed the stuffed tiger to the other side of the bed, where she heard a much larger thud than she expected. Grabbing a trophy by the bookcase, Jamie backed against a wall.
“Now what the hell did you go and do that for?” a female voice, her accent faintly British, said from the other side of the bed. “That was very rude of you to do to your old pal.”
Jamie watched as a very feminine hand reached up onto the bed, silver-gray fur covering the back of it. The body that followed it as lithe and trim, with perky breasts surrounded by a gray tiger stripe t-shirt.
“I’m losing my mind,” Jamie said, her wide hazel eyes staring at the catgirl in front of her. “My parents’ death was too much. I must’ve snapped. My stuffed toy is a catgirl.”

“Convince my mom?” Jamie slowly slid down against the wall, still clutching the trophy. “Mom and pa died right after I graduated.”
The catgirl winced. “Oh, well, sorry to hear that, love. I suppose you don’t remember, then, what she did. Binding another witch’s familiar is no small thing.”
“Witch’s familiar?” Jamie blinked. “What are you talking about?”
The catgirl moved to the edge of the bed. “I could show you, but I’m your familiar. I can’t affect you unless you let me.”
“Let you do what?” Jamie asked.
“Can I please remind you of what it was like to be a child?” the silver-furred catgirl asked.
“Will it hurt?” Jamie asked, setting the trophy aside.
The catgirl kissed Jamie’s forehead. “Not at all. I promise.”
“Well, I’ve already lost my mind,” Jamie thought, “might as well enjoy the ride.” She looked up at Shiva and nodded. “Okay, you can remind of what it was like to be a child, as long as I’m not hurt by it.”
The catgirl clapped her hands and stood up, offering her hands to Jamie. “Good. Let’s get started.” Jamie took her hands and was quickly pulled to her feet. A wind blew around her. Her eyes widened as she watched her pumps become shiny, her pant legs merging together around her long, toned legs and becoming a dress skirt. The skirt lightened until it was white then darkened in a cute pink even as it billowed outward.
“How is this possible?” Jamie asked.
Shiva smiled and sat down on the bed, pulling Jamie beside her. “Well, with my form unlocked, your powers unlocked, too, but I’m redirecting it all. You’re like a baby again. All the untapped power, no control. Speaking of,” Shiva said with a smile, “I don’t know why you bothered finally getting potty trained when you were fourteen.”
