You're right in that monologing wouldn't have been a good idea, and I can definitely see where Beth was coming off jaded, but why feels less obvious to me. I know that part of my fixation on the IUD was because it's what was led with. That, and I guess from what I've read, I never saw her love of toys as something that reflected her emotional disconnect. I never saw it as a replacement for intimacy. I always saw it as something she did regardless of relationship status. Her dry spell shown in puss in boots seemed to end when she gained confidence. If she's had more dry spells, it hasn't seemed that way. Even with her Onatomy short, it seemed more that she was relating her familiarity with and love of her own body more than showing a character issue. That's just what I saw though.

Sorry you feel that way. I'm trying not to be explicit with my explanations while in story, and just letting things play out more naturally, so I didn't hit that button hard. Because you see it as a story, you see the removal of birth control as a plot device. I saw it as a character issue, Beth's recognition of where she thinks her life is going. I would hope to express this without a narrative block of text reflecting her internal monologue, or pages of unnatural conversation to that effect.

Beth was expressing the sardonic and jaded attitude that she's not going to have the opportunities anymore and so she's not concerned with it. It's the path of regression back to where she was when she first appeared: disregarding connections to others and using toys for satisfaction.

I agree with all of that, and I do realize that her character will grow and evolve. That's to be expected. However, she didn't need to stop her birth control until she started showing signs of menopause. Her line of, "they don't last forever" is inaccurate. She could have gotten it replaced when she got the last one removed. That was the move that felt purely for plot convenience. Everything else was very on par for her. From that moment on it was obvious where the story was going. I couldn't figure out the motive for that other than pushing her toward pregnancy for the story. I know it won't matter to the bulk of your audience, but it's something that stood out like a sore thumb. Trixie believing that line was on par for her. She's the sort of ditz I would expect that logic from.

She's always been depicted as someone who is both sexually compulsive and also who has used people for sex. My intention is not for her to be "strong independent woman", but to be a woman who has issues and wraps them up in a jaded veneer, coping with her inability to find fulfillment. That's far more interesting and poignant to me. Character's like Beth are sometimes archetypes, but often they become arcs. She's on one. And she will evolve. I thought about it, and there's a question that she will face in a conversation with her sister in the future. It's not about whether she doesn't make mistakes, or whether she wants a baby or not. It's about what she will be in 10 years: The same woman, just ten years older, chasing the same things, trying to hope for the same kinds of things, and finding it much harder as age sets in. Or something more, an acquired level of new responsibility and a legacy beyond just her art and a memory in the minds of her lovers. She will change. She will grow.

Bummer. Considering you do plenty of pregnancy stuff, and the way the comic started, this was the obvious ending, but single mom/milf Beth is a bummer as far as character development. Obviously it works as fan service. I liked her living her unconventional, independent lifestyle. I liked that she was living a traditionally masculine lifestyle as a woman. She was a strong, intelligent female character, and this arc showed her making a continuing series of obvious mistakes someone half her age would, for no other reason than to get knocked up. *shrugs* I love your work, but this would probably be my least liked arcs. Feels very off character for her, but on brand for your comics, so it is what it is. I'm clearly in the minority with this opinion.

Sigh... Knew it, just hated to call it. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with Beth getting pregnant, it was bound to happen eventually as much as she did it(giggles), it's nice to see and I wish her the best of luck being a mom now. But from that asshole?(sigh) Beth said it perfectly, "Fuck that guy!" She's better off without him, maybe she'll get lucky and find a man now who will take care of her and her kid(s). So I guess this is the end of Beth-gasms and her enjoying single life(sort of), but look forward to seeing her future, hope it's a good one, she's been through so much, having followed her stories all these years since "Better Days", she's my fav out of all your characters. Please do her justice Jay!
