Ugh! The whole "butterfly flaps its wings" meme is such a gross misrepresentation. I'm a software engineer, not a climate scientist. But as I understand it the real point is that climate models are, at least historically (i.e., three decades ago when I first heard about this phenomenon), extremely sensitive to initial conditions. Starting a climate model with a seemingly insignificant change to initial conditions would result in different outcomes. Which is not at all surprising given an understanding of "chaos theory" and the limitations of computer modeling.
