Holiday/Tim Tour Schedule
The 5th Annual Holiday Extravaganza is this Wednesday 12/18 5pm - 8pm PT and will be FREE for all - tell your deadbeat friends who aren't on the Patreon! Lots of fun surprises in store as usual.
Then we take a holiday break until Thursday, 1/9.
And then I have to be honest with you, the schedule gets a bit screwy during Tim's big tour from the end of January into mid-February. There will be some days switching, a few with Tim remote from the road, maybe an unplugged (pre-taped) ep. BUT the show will go on and will remain full of fun and laughter, I can personally guarantee.

I'm slowly working my way through all the old episodes to make the Patreon Full Episodes Collection as complete as possible. There's a chunk in the early 100s that are still missing video episode posts, there's still some "After Hours" era that has After Hours but not the "main show," and then there's all the stuff from before we started the Patreon on episode 100.
For completists in a hurry, there's always the very thorough Compendium document that's got everything and then some.
Hey speaking of compendiums - why can't we get a stinking Wikipedia page?! Is there anybody here who can make that happen? It's been sticking in my craw for years, and when I tried to make one a while back it got rejected. If you can help with that, we'll throw you some free swag.
Live Stream/Patreon Embed/YouTube Chat
(Sorry this is really long and complicated and a bit inside baseball. But some of you may be interested, and some people have run into issues or had questions because of this semi-technical stuff.)
As you may have noticed, we've changed how the Youtube stream/Patreon embed works. In the past, we had the live 2+ hour "full show" streaming free for all, then switched it to an unlisted URL, keeping it embedded here on Patreon hypothetically for members only. We always knew this wasn't the sturdiest paywall, but it seemed like a decent honor system. However, in recent months, that unlisted URL seemed to be getting picked up by the YT algorithm (and/or freeloaders were finding the various simple ways around it) to the point that the paywalled "full" show (Office Hours+) was getting almost as many views as the free-for-all "first half" (regular Office Hours). Which just seemed a bit unfair to you, our paying supporters.
So we made the decision to tighten up the paywall. The show still streams free for all, but then we edit down that live stream so the URL stays the same for the "free half," continues to spread via that YT algorithm, and a new embed goes up on Patreon right after the show (usually about 15 minutes or so after the stream ends).
If you're not watching live, and you don't start watching in that little 15 minute window, you won't really notice anything different in the Patreon embed. You will notice the live chat now disappears, which is a bit of a bummer. But we felt the sacrifice was worth it to be more fair to paying customers, and it allows us to spread the good word and better monetize the "free half" with more views. It's already doubled our public views fairly consistently, which we are pretty stoked about.
Troubleshooting/pro tips:
I've seen one or two comments about the Patreon embed being the one hour show. Try refreshing, or maybe it's a cache thing where you started during the live stream (or that little window) and then came back. If you see Office Hours+ in the title (vs. Office Hours) you know you've got the correct one.
If you like to watch the full show in the YT app or a tv connected device, once the new embed is up, click/tap the YT logo to "watch on YouTube" the episode, then save the URL to a playlist on YouTube so you can access it that way.

thanks for the updates! always a pleasant surprise when you all make episodes while busy working. I appreciate it. I do have some thoughts about caller pronouns, with an idea or two. I’ll provide some backstory to hopefully reassure you of my flexible stance: I’m a Vietnamese-American female-presenting, assigned-female-at-birth. I don’t align with enough female gender norms in this American society to feel socially female, so I’ve identified as socially non-binary. I work in the female-dominated field of nursing. My team lead, who I’ll call NP, she/her, goes against many female gender norms (she’s blunt/honest, factually driven, loud, and yes, I like her style 👌), had a quick talk with some of us office nurses about needed change to stay legal. She referenced our fellow coworkers’ collective gender and scoffed at how difficult it was for them to change because of that. I felt comfortable speaking up, expressing my eagerness (I like to break systems to build a better one) and also how I technically couldn’t be counted in that pool/stereotype since I didn’t identify as female. NP asked for my pronouns, which I gave. It struck me how sincere she was when, a couple weeks later, she checked again. Each time, I expressed my understanding that not everyone will know just by looking at me, so I don’t expect that from anyone; I lean into the “she” presentation despite the “non-she” in my head. I also don't care enough to let just anybody from the get-go know about that more-private side of me; I know what I am. Yes, it’d be nice not to be expected to be extremely polite due to misogyny-based expectations of women in nursing. Yes, it’d be nice if there were consequences to patient’s families who outright dismiss my ethnic origins (“you all look the same”). To all of that, I ignore and forge ahead, keeping my stance and pushing back when needed. My close friends know who I am and their opinions are all that matters to me. But I do dream of a world where pronouns roll off the tongue easily, say, attached to someone’s name when you first meet them in a quick introduction. I have hope for that world despite the next 4 years of political hell. I foster that hope in my own personal sphere, my own garden. I find OHL is a sliver of that nice world, a safer space. So when it comes to gender identity and increasing the comfort of the show, I have some real-life ideas for a space that I’ve come to treasure: perhaps, next to someone’s name in the Zoom room, they could be encouraged to add their pronouns. If not, maybe it can be asked when someone’s name is confirmed, like hot off the Hotline. On-air outing can lead to another can of worms with those who don’t agree with “identity politics”, a can I’ve been lucky to avoid as a newer viewer (I heard it was pretty tumultuous in the past). I don't know if you want to add those worms to your worm farm, as I don’t know if confronting bad apples as they show up will be a mood-killer or overtax our moderators (at least the Youtube chat is ephemeral now 🥲) But maybe we don’t want to rub shoulders with those kinds of people, anyway? Drives me absolutely fucking nuts when On Cinema pulls the Oscar Special stream to do the something similiar because you are like 3 hours into a live special and if you had to pause for any reason including lag you miss the ending until 12 hours later or w.e when it is reuploaded plus it kinda feels like a vanity thing since we are already behind a paywall on there. If this has already been implemented on Office Hours then I did not even notice and if it is good for the show I welcome it of course. I do not mind paying while others watch for free but I can see how in the long term this could effect sustainability/expansion of Office Hours if ppl decide to drop off. If I could afford to give more I would y'all put out some of the only shit worth watching. I doubt it would bring in much for new folks but maybe it would help the patreon if Vic & Doug did a low infrastructure sister show behind the paywall kinda like how we used to have Office Hours East has that been considered at all? Thanks for all the behind the scenes stuff you and other folks do Captain.

Thanks Matt! I have some earthworms too. When I was a kid we had rabbits as pets and worm "beds" below their cages. It made the most awesome gardening amendment. Today I just use compost, can't stand the idea of rabbits in cages 24/7. The worms work so fast and it's kind of fun. Thanks for all you do for the show clearly the ship would sink without you.

Are they just at the beginning? To my knowledge it’s just the pre roll that you can skip pretty quickly into it. I feel ya it’s a drag - not to defend big tech here but it’s kind of standard issue for a free platform to have some kind of built in ads.

It is not monetized by us. If you’re seeing ads it’s just YouTube’s standard platform ads. The only way to get rid of those is paying for YouTube premium which eliminates all ads. Almost all the full shows get demonetized for copyright reasons so we couldn’t even turn it on if we wanted.
