I’m not sure what “dank asl” means or what is “random” about the articles as they are all related to the deceptive tactics used by TM or the various lawsuits. Literally the first link is titled “Ivanka Trump’s Gurus Say Their Techniques Can End War and Make You Fly” which should be a red flag for anyone. Click on that and you can read all about the magical beliefs of TM. And to be clear there is a lot wider of a spectrum between the Branch Davidians and a legitimate organization, in fact many cult survivors have used that exact language to justify to friends and family why they are not in a cult only to later realize it was. Call it whatever you want but it is a fraudulent organization that purposely deceives individuals and organizations for money and power. This has been very well documented over the past 50 years.

That first website link is dank asl, it is just a swathe of random articles about TM (most not having anything to do with it being a cult?). . . I think people can form cult-like attachment to something like TM, but the organization doesn’t have the structure or ideology of a Cult. They let you ‘leave,’ though you can pay to learn, and it’s not really ‘joining’ anything. There is plenty to criticize it for (new age spiritualism, in general), but it is not a full fledged cult. It is important to keep things in relative perspective. Acting like TM is equivalent to the Branch Dividians is absurd. You admit that most people have a surface level experience that is fine and not harmful in anyway. . .people can get too far into anything, no? I think the disagreement here boils down to the fact that you have a lower bar for something to qualify as a cult than Matt (seemingly) or myself. You got really aggro because someone expressed a different opinion than yours. I’m sure people have had negative experiences with TM people, but that doesn’t make it a cult. Organizations with hierarchical structures tend to lead towards abuse possibilities.

First of all my assertion that TM has for decades been known to be a cult by experts is not in any way a criticism of Tim. I’ve worked with hundreds of cult survivors and I would never criticize them or think less of them and neither should you. By design most people who casually engage with TM on a surface level won’t have negative experiences and the organization will come across as benign. That doesn’t change the fact that the roots of the foundation, its history and philosophy are completely fraudulent. Unfortunately the organization has put millions of dollars into media campaigns, sought celebrity endorsements, and produced misleading science so people who engage with it on a surface level will see it as innocuous. If you actually care to look beyond the surface before making a judgement you will find the various lawsuits, abuse allegations, fraudulent claims and more that have been known for 50+ years. For god sakes just google “TM Yogic Flying” and you’ll see what an obvious and hilarious grift it is. Again there’s decades worth of research and really great resources if you care to look. If you want to put it all in context read “McMindfullness” by Ronald Purser. I love Tim and am not judging him in any way but the facts are the facts.

The MLM talk reminded me of when my older brother got half pulled in to CutCo selling knifes. He was like only 15 maybe 16 at the time, which I guess was okay, and he was an angsty little goth kid so everyone was worried about him caring around a case full of knives everywhere and demonstrating how sharp they were at family gatherings, when he finally sold the sets he was given they tried to pay him in more knives instead of money luckily he didn’t go for it but he never got paid, these MLM scams are all F’d up though.
