EXCLUSIVE - 3D Printed 'Ghost Chipper' Files and Instructions
🕑 Added 2023-01-28 18:48:37 +0000 UTCTo say that the 2016 reboot is 'hotly debated' in the fan community is a bit of an understatement - but I have a slightly different take: When Ghostbusters: Answer the Call came out, I wasn't really into the Ghostbusters scene at all. While I grew up with the original '84 and '89 entries, I had only the vaguest awareness of a new Ghostbusters movie in 2016. At the time, I was far too busy starting a new business venture and being a new parent to pay attention to the latest in pop culture.
I remember being on a plane ride returning from Los Angeles on business and seeing Ghostbusters 2016 as an option on the movie list. I was in the mood for a light comedy throwback so I gave it a chance from the confines of my cramped plane seat. Honestly - thought it was fun and it put Ghostbusters back on my radar. Shortly afterwards, I found the old RGB cartoon streaming Netflix to show my kid and he loved it.... fast forward to today and here I am making 3D printable parts!

I think many fans generally agree on is that the new equipment design was pretty cool. My personal favorite addition was the Ghost Chipper - a device the sucks in a ghost and reverts it to a spray of ectoplasmic goo. It's a cool looking piece of kit and it has the absurd comedic gag factor that I like in my GB gear. For me, it also has an aesthetic that blends into some of the original equipment. For example, I fully intend on hanging this from my belt alongside the original equipment.
The 3D parts here are designed to be printed and attached together using an assortment of 2mm, 3mm, and 4mm screws with some light use of super glue. There is plenty of room for electronic effects (coming soon... so many ideas). For example, the rear 'grinder' section is designed to attach to a servo motor for some proper chipping action.
I also included a tripod attachment so the device can stand on display if you have a booth at con or other event. I printed mine entirely in black and have plans to do a full post-production sanding, painting, and weathering.
I didn't have exact measurements for these parts - my design is based purely on photographic stills from the movie. Some liberties were taken to support easy assembly and to fit on smaller print beds size.

I actually really loved ATC. I've been wanting to revisit the pack, and do some of the other gear, so I can't wait to get this printing. If you do end up doing the trap, that would be amazing.

FYI after playing with this off and on for the last 7 months I don't think I'll be able to get the grinder to work. The tolerances just aren't right for me, I've tried printing about 30 different sized gears and the best I can do is get 2 of the 3 grinders to spin (and they keep getting jammed). I could keep experimenting and modding the STL's but I just don't have the time, so it's going to have to remain a static prop for now unfortunately.

Just printing this now, so far so good except that it looks like the lower Grinder Gear (Part Name "Gear") can't spin because it hits up against the lower servo post ("Side B"). I thought maybe it was just bad printer tolerances at my end, but it seems to be locked in place in the interactive dashboard too. For now I can get around this by cutting/filing a chunk out of the lower servo-mount on Side B so there's space for it to spin. It only needs a few extra millimeters to clear the edge.
