Sorry for this novel but I have a lot to say about the cure working vs the cure being made a reality. Don't feel bad about the would the cure even work? debate even if the creators said it would work they left ambiguous something else that matters as much if not more that supports your cure actually working argument. That being the competency of the Fireflies. In every single encounter in the show we witnessed the Fireflies they failed miserably at their mission. They failed massively in the first two stages of what was supposed to be a relay race taking Ellie west. First Marlene's team was catastrophically injured including her second in command who lost her ear. This event is why they hired Tess & Joel to get Ellie to the first hand-off team. Joel & Tess take Ellie but quickly find out the hand off team has been slaughtered. Only after Tess gets infected and all but forces Joel to continue the mission does it. The Fireflies were 0-2. Then after getting past St. Louis with zero help from the Fireflies they set their sites on the next location the Fireflies are said to occupy. When Joel & Ellie get there what they find is the Fireflies said peace out leaving behind research animals & an indication they went to Utah. The inability by the Fireflies to keep safe and protect this facility causes Joel & Ellie to waste more time and puts Ellie their blessed cure in the cage of cannibals & nearly kills Joel. There is never any indication any Fireflies have been sent to locate or help them after they leave Boston. The next time we see the Fireflies they well let's call it what it was they attack Joel & Ellie with a flashbang grenade knocking them both out. Now of course in movies & TV when ever these devices are used no one dies but there is a very real chance someone can be killed by those devices from being concussed, it landing to close, something you hit or land on being stunned. Hell with guns being part of the equation if Joel or Ellie had only been stunned there could have been a deadly fire fight including her killed by one the Fireflies returning fire. Now I get Marlene couldn't have known based on what she knew of Joel that he would've have come to love Ellie like a daughter but once she sensed he was being protective she could have lied and said he could visit her after the procedure. Or kept Joel sedated until after the procedure was over. Allowing him to leave before the procedure was over opened the door for his mission based rage that killed 17 people including Abbys father. If Ellie were already dead sure maybe Joel still goes nuts but maybe he realizes with Eliie dead and the cure is real he can't let her sacrifice before nothing so he kills Marlene but not Abby's dad. Hell maybe he makes it his mission to protect her dad so he can make the cure and save the world but he only did it so the rest of the world lives then he kills her dad. Bottom line is those 17 people were killed by 1 man and endless stupidity by the Fireflies. Best case scenario for them was Joel never actually gets attached to Ellie hands her over but that doesn't mean the cure ever makes to the world. There is a higher probability at some point in the process of making & manufacturing the cure the Fireflies get slaughtered during a mission with no one knowing a working cure existed or nearly did.
